Show uu GOODMAN ON TRIAL EOR FORGERY The April term of court was opened this morning in Judge Howell's division, divi-sion, the Jurymen being called to au-1 swer to their names, and the business of the court proceeded with In tho trial of Jomcs Goodman, charged with fcrgery. Jurymen not present and excused ex-cused for various reasons were as follows: fol-lows: George' Smith, oxcused from service ser-vice because of Illness; G. R. Belnap, excused because of work he has on hand In the sheriff's offlce, until next Monday; Michael Buckralller, excusod bocause of deafness; C. M Clay, ex-cubed ex-cubed until next Monday because of business affairs; Enoch Farr and A C. Bjbeo wero reported to be out of tho jurisdiction of the court. The Jurors sworn to hear the case before the court are: H. B. Arnold, George A. Graves, J. S Campbell, Virgil Stallings, Jack Browning, Brown-ing, Timothy Kendell, Isaac Beltman and Benjamin Chadwick, Jr. Goodman is charged with forging the name of J. G. Read and Brothers' company to a check on the First National Na-tional 'Bank of this city for $21.85, dated October 22, 1910, the check being be-ing made payable to Sam Brown. The information btates that the check was cashed by Mrs. Kathcrlno Grelner, proprietress of tho Bismarck rooming house on lower Twenty-fifth street, the man offering the check to her in payment for lodging, and Mrs. Grolner was the first witness called to the stand to testify for tho state. Mrs. Grelner stated that Goodman, alias Brown, came to her place of business on October 22, 1910, and ghvo her the check in payment of his room rent, amounting to ?C. She accepted ac-cepted tho check and gave him $15 85 in change She said that (Goodman gave his name as Brown, the name written as tho payee in- the check, and endorsed the check In the name of Brown. She saw him write the name. Ho told her that the name on the check was his name and that ho was working for tho Read company. J. O. Read, a member of the firm or J. G. Read & Brothers company, stated stat-ed on the witness stand that the check is a forgery and that his company had never issued a check of Its kind to a man by the name of Brown. The signature, be said, was4 entirely different differ-ent from the real signature of the firm. t t |
