Give Away Education There is a rule in parenting, it states that the most successful students are those whose parents are involved with their school work, if s unquestioned. Ifs scripture. At the risk of being labeled a heretic, however, I will challenge the parenting rule. Sort of. At least I will question what the word "involved" 'means- - I will question whether the involvement of a parent of a second grader should be the same as the involvement of a sophomore. When a child in primary grades is failing behind, it is perfectly reasonable for the teacher, parent and child to sit down and plan a "contract" for work, completion. The parent and teacher work out special treats for rewards and carefully monitor every assignment and every deadline. The purpose of the contract is to allow the child to understand he is capable. But when we engage in such it can , intensive involvement long-terhave the opposite result. And thafs where my heresy comes in. As a child enters secondary grades, I believe the parents 'must begin a weaning process. Involvement must still be there. They must hear our encouragement, enthusiasm or concern. Our hearts must still be there. But a child must be given space for independent decisions in his or her daily workday. This is a painful process for us because most children will not make the decisions we know are best for them. It's tempting to want to check and make sure they have all their books. To correct the spelling an a paper. To call the teacher to find out a deadline. Don! Let them know your expectations. Let natural rewards and natural consequences take their course. Let your children become decision makers. Let go. $500.
