Show TAGE wri.PFR mO THE HELPER JOURNAL .,i,.,. Perhaps the most popular recreational project undertaken during the last year in Helper was the lighting of the baseball field. Anyone who has attended any of the games played by members of the county softball league will know for themselves just what the re action to the project has been. Knowing the circumstances connected with the promoting of the project, and the individuals who failed to give up until the thing had been accomplished, one local man mustt be singled out and credit given where credit Is due. A. R. Demmac, local doctor, must be given credit and complimented for his ceaseless efforts hi promoting the Idea. To date Dr. Demraan has turned over $,'524.85 to the city to apply on the payment for materials used. Considering that the lights have been Installed slightly over a month shows beyond any question of a doubt that people are coming to Helper. The actual costs of the lighting system amounted to $1,203.4 Of this, $880.17 went for materials and $323.30 for labor. To make the job complete the park should be sodded, lights continued around ti)e entire field and the grandstands remodeled. If this were done. Helper's ball park would be second to no other park In the state. With a few more boosters and workers like Dr. Demman thi could be accomplished with very little expense to the city. Let's all get behind the Idea and make Our Ball Park the envy of every oilier city in the state. i FIGURING A RAILROAD WORKER'S PAY jii iar- iignt or current railroad wa.ees, pensions, working hours etc. which are among ithe most liberal of any Industry a letter printed In rial Hanna's column in the Chicago Journal of Commerce is interesting. In order to explain the system o; payment for his services, he found it necessary to draw a paranei with plowing. His Letter follows: "You would be paid four dollars a day for plowing or tw0 dollars an acre whichever way would give you the most -lcnoy, and if vou plowed your two acres by noon you would get a day's pay anyway ana you would not Dave to work in the afternoon, or if you worked mm iJiuweu ariwner two acres you would get two days' pay for the day's work. You would get a half hour extra for harnessing the mules 1n the morning and if you have to go up hill and down you get some extra pay more than if the land was level. Also, if you have to turn around more than three stumps hr a day you get extra pay and if it takes you more than five minutes to turn a corner over and above what it would with the team you used to have y u would get extra pay for that. If you plowed part of the day and harrowed the rest of the day, you would get extra pay because It wns a different class of service and if a plow broke down or a mule got sick with the flu you would get paid for your acres or hours whichever was the most up to the place of the accident to the mule or ahe pbw whichever ft was, aua men you would get paid for the time you Vere waiting for the mule or plow to get well or changed for another one, at the rate per hour, and then when you started plowing again you would get M,:'.;ever was the most, bearing in mind paid by the acre or hour corners, dodging stumps and such going up hill, down hill, like as I have mentioned. Then when you quit at night and some other fellow was ahead of you at the water trough and you have to wait five minutes to water the mules, you get extra pay for that which is called detention." There is truth as well as humor la this statement.. Efforts to saddle the railroads, which have not been able to earn an adequate profit in any year since the war, with arbitrary costs, are unjustified Dinner Given For and would place on cf our most essential industries In a grave flu Wedded Pair ancial position, detrimental to both the workers and the public.
