Off the Cuff The Armstrong Mansion Back when the kids were younger and Christmases weren't so complicated, my husband Steve and 1 had a tradition where we would leave the kids with Mom, and flee to Salt Lake for an overnight getaway. We'd always eat at Tony Romas at Trolley Square, we'd go Christmas shopping, and then we'd see "A Christmas Carol" at the Hale Center Theater. But our favorite part was the bed and breakfast that Steve discovered one of those first years, the Armstrong Mansion. The Armstrong Mansion, located at 667 East 100 South in Salt Lake is a completely refurbished home that was built in 1893 by Francis Armstrong, a prominent Salt Lake citizen and two-term mayor. Francis Armstrong built the mansion in fulfillment of a wedding-day promise to his beloved bride Isabel. Francis had traveled Europe extensively and had seen many different architectural styles, but he and Isabel chose the Queen Anne-Style for their home. In its original state, the mansion had a "beautiful master bedroom, Victorian dining room, library, parlor, and living quarters for the house staff." At the time it was also one of the only homes in Salt Lake City to have indoor plumbing and running water. In its day, the mansion was the place where the Armstrongs hosted parties and welcomed friends as well as strangers in need. Francis died when he was only 59 years old. Isabel continued to reside at the mansion until her own death in 1930, after which the mansion went through a number of changes. Through the years of the Great Depression and both world wars, the mansion was used as an office building, an acupuncture clinic, and at one time was even a motorcycle repair shop. But in the 1990s, a group of private investors decided something had to be done. They called on surviving members of the Armstrong family, collaborated their funds, and dug up the family records to help them restore the mansion. They restored it as closely as possible to its original 19th century beauty, all except each of the rooms was turned into themed bedroom in a quaint, but luxurious bed and breakfast. It opened its doors to the public in 1994 —101 years af- ter its original completion, Now there is a Mayor's Parlor that has a crackling fire and homemade cookies and hot chocolate or coffee, Isabel's Dining Room where they serve breakfast — and we're not talking a platter of dayold donuts. They make everything right there in the kitchen, muffins, and gourmet quiche — and serve you on linen and crystal. Each of the rooms is themed after a different month of the year with intricate carved wood, and furnished with period-appropriate antiques, There is January Promise, February Interlude, March Hideaway, April Gardens, May Splendor, June Bride, July Glory, August Retreat, September Woods, October Hollow, November Vintage, December Dreams, and Cherished Years. You'll want to make reservations so you can secure the room you want. The phone number is (801) 531-1333, or 1-800-7081333. They also have a website at www.armstrongmanor.com. We haven't been there for years now, but we still talk about it, and want to go back. Someday I'm sure we will.
