de restaurant etc 0 I f J THE INTERIOR The arrangement of the exhibits in the main building at the present writing is entirely too incomplete to toI I admit of a specific description It is very evident however that the interior will present presenta a richer rieber better organized and more attractive appearance than it did last year The display of fruits though still incomplete is in- in incomparably incomparably in incomparably comparably better than was that of 1888 and the exhibit of farm crops will also excel by far the previous one The third one sou south th of the gallery is devoted to the fine arts of which there will be a magnificent display when the entire department is all arranged It will wiH be shown what a remarkable development has been effected in local art and that Utah may well wen be proud of her tal talent tal- tal talI talent talent ent in this regard I The florists of the city are en- en engaged engaged en engaged in a lively rivalry to make makeI I the best exhibits and the result will willI willbe willbe willbe I be superb displays when all have their exhibits completely arranged Our mineral products will have much better justice done to them this yei r than last and several branches of home manufactures will be splendidly represented In this connection it is proper to mention the magnanimity of Z C CM M 1 I shoe factory Owing to its manufacturers manufacturers to exhibit their goods roods THE FORMAL OPENING Not until noon did many visitors arrive and anti then the crowd was too small for the formal opening A Afew Afew few minutes past twel twelve ve o'clock the band played a selection and from that time on there was a steady and rapid increase in the number of people in the building and on the grounds At precisely one o'clock after a tune by the band Hit His Excellency Governor Thomas accompanied by Secretary Sells and ami the om officers cers of the Deseret Agricultural and Manufacturing Manufacturing turing Society took seats on the musicians balcony Col John R Winder Vinder president of the society called aIled the assembly to order and announced that the formal formal open opening exercises would now begin A stirring selection by the band followed this announcement after which prayer was offered by Bishop Orson F Whitney The doorkeepers ers were instructed to close the doors of the main building and the band played another inspiriting selection Col Winder introduced Governor Thomas who said Ladies and gentlemen On On behalf of the officers officers cers of the D A M Society I welcome you to this the seventeenth nth annual fair ot of or the society I am proud to say that it is the most elaborate elaborate elaborate orate expensive and complete ex- ex exhibit exhibit ex exhibit hibit that ever took place in our Terri Territory wry The society is worthy of the highest praise for the pride anc and I t interest development it has taken in the develop develop- development development ment of the agricultural and manu manu- manufacturing manufacturing manufacturing resources and industries of our Territory The agricultural horticultural and live stock interests of Utah ha have ve been remarkably well wen devel developed and I congratulate the people on the magnificent display present present- presented presented ed here Providence has showered its blessings upon Utah and has blessed us with a splendid climate and with resources of surpassing rich rich- richness richness ness and extent The live stock exhibit at this fair is iM the best the has ever produced and aud will equal any in the west numbers considered Among our home manufactured goods are fabrics of splendid quality including fine dress goods Our woolen factories furnish employ employ- employment employment employment ment and help to consume the wool we produce and I regret that there are not more of them vegetables The display of fruits and an vege vege- vege tables is as fine as could be found in the western western- western part part of the United States Considering the long dry season we have had the exhibits inthis in inthis inthis this department are magnificent In all an the other departments the exhibits are fine tine one worthy of special attention is that of the ladies where are shown many articles of domestic economy proving the taste skill and industry of the la- la la dies ladies L In another department you see two pianos one made in the last century the other in our day The comparison wonderful will show how hoy wonder wonder- wonderful wonderful ful has been the success success of Ameri Ameri- American American American can genius whose products are now being sent to all parts of the world Let us encourage these fairs faim They serve a double purpose they bring the people together socially in ina ina Ina a manner productive of much good and they stimulate our agri agri- agricultural agricultural cultural and manufacturing inter inter- interests interests interests ests Agriculture is the basis bas basis of all aJl industries Let us UR encourage it and build it up and aim to make our Territory first in agriculture manu manu- manufactures manufactures manufactures and commerce A people who ate afe are well educated and masters of themselves and a people who are masters of themselves are Bre masters of the world Let us then educate our children and teach them to improve their surroundings and especially to appreciate the blessings of our government the greatest and best upon the earth Loud and prolonged prolonged applause followed the Governors Governor's address At its close Col Winder arose and said I now de declare lare this the seven seven- seventeenth seventeenth annual fair of the Deseret Agricultural and Manufacturing Society opened The band struck up a lively air and the crowd began moving about The opening exercises occupied just 20 minutes N By the time the formal open open- ing opening had bad been concluded the stalls for the Ii live ve stock were mostly fined filled making a display at once very r extensIve and remarkable for the superiority of most of the anima animals shown Time and space will not admit of a further visitors increased iu in numbers n rapidly and by three o'clock the main building was thronged The work of arranging exhibits was rap rap- rapidly rapidly 1 idly pushed in all parts of the build build- building building building ing and the result was that before night remarkable progress s was made most of the displays being by that time placed in excellent order During the afternoon the horses r and cattle were placed in the stalls j So 80 extensive is this tills department that 1 even a cursory view of each of the finest specimens would consume several hours of time on the part of visitors tors r During yesterday afternoon there were placed in the proper depart depart- department department department ment sixteen or seventeen samples of sugar beet by as many different F competitors each of whom is reaching after the prize which has been offered for the best specimen men These beets come from various parts of the Territory including Green River Biver the Sand SandRidge SandRidge Ridge in Davis County and several localities in this county The num num- number number number ber of c competitors and th the number of different localities from which they hall hail indicates that a com com- commendable commendable commendable interest has been excited in the production of the sugar be beet t The samples on exhibition will b be subjected to a chemical the result will be fraught with great iut Interest to persons concerned in th the manufacture of sugar at home hOIlle Last evening the building and grounds were brilliantly lighted up and the attendance was very large The work of arranging the exhibits exhibits its was pushed during the after after- afternoon afternoon noon noon and evening with very satis satis- satisfactory satisfactory factory results THIS MORNING The appearance e of the grounds and main building this morning was greatly improved Exhibits were in better order and many new ones had been put in place Addi Addi- Additions distinctions refer reference nce will be made to a few of the exhibits in the several departments which are worthy of special mention The display of the Utah Soap Boap Com Com- Company Company Company pany is somewhat unique and de- de decidedly de decidedly attractive large A A large block of mottled Castile Vastile soap having much the appearance of brown granite is surmounted hya by a column of marble 8 soap ap about fl five va feet high and ten inches square On Un this is an orna orna- ornamental ornamental ornamental mental architectural cap also of soap which is surmounted by a statuette of composition Samples r of various kinds of soap complete the exhibit The Utah Stove fc Hardware Co Coshow show a number of made home-made heat heat- heating heating heating ing stoves of neat appearance Devey fe were the founders In the mineral department the display is considerably better than last years year's Collections of ores and minerals that would require days to examine are shown as are a num num- number number number ber of articles of home production of great importance Of these proba proba- probably bly the most important is a barrel of made made home Portland Cortland cement manu manu- manufactured manufactured by Elias Morris All Al of the ingredients are found near this city and the furnaces and machines in which they were manipulated are Morris on the premises of Mr Morris So far as 88 tested the made home-made arti article le leis is equal to the imported and the fact that we can here in Utah make Portland cement is one of immense Importance Vast quan quan- quantities of it are imported but instead of this we shall probably soon be shipping it These is also on exhibition a bell bell- mouthed bell mouthed joint of Portland cement sewer pipe of large size adze which Wl iCh wl ich was waa made by uj Mr wi Morris and w which for fora fora iura a number of reasons is far superior to the pipe now being laid by the city Mr Morris also shows what he cas calls Mosaic stone for steps cop cop- ing coping tiles etc made of marble and cement It is a very handsome ma- ma material material ma material takes a high polish and cart can be cheaply produced Mr Simpkins shows a number of samples of build building ing brick and Mr Morris shows what sort of fl nr r rick and furnace tiles tHes he be makes Hewlett Brothers have a very at- at attractive attractive at attractive of summer drinks showing sample bottles of a great many kinds all made at home by themselves Denhalter Son are close contestants in the same line The Utah Cracker Factory has a avery avery avery very handsome and remarkably varied exhibit of their goods An i incredible number of diff different rent kinds of crackers cakes etc are shown in ina Ina ina a very attractive manner In this department the Eagle Cracker Factory does itself great credit by the attractiveness and varied character of its display H A Tuckett Who had such a splendid display of made home home candies last year is not a whit be- be behind behind be behind hind this and in some respects hasa has hasa hasa a better hetter exhibit The varieties he shows is surprising and the artistic manner of manufacture leaves little to be desired The Beaver Woolen Mills ha have ve in past years had a ahard ahard ahard hard struggle in the interest of home manufactures and have always labored under many disadvantages disadvantages disadvantages vantages among which have been heavy freights and a lack of capital But these mills have attained a suc suc- success success success cess ia is the manufacture of certain lines of fabrics that is surprising and highly creditable The samples of 8 and fl innels they have on exhibition are flue floe enough in quality and appearance appearance to satisfy any reasonable person while their q quality makes them cheap at the prices at which they sell sen The same Institution manufactures manufactureR from its f fabrics and mens men's 2 underwear
