Show WAR AMONG RANCHERS on october 80 there occurred before commissioner green Greeni nau pro ce edings on an application to have an emery county rancher named goo geo C whitmore bound over to keep the peace which indicate that a serious condition of affairs exists in the vicinity of grassy trail a station on the B R Q G W in that county grassy trail is in the center of a region much frequented by herds of sheep and cattle as it is a good range country L A scott elliott owns an extensive ranch in the vicinity and some miles distant from his bis place is the ranch of goo geo C whitmore which to is located in what is known as Whit mores canyon mr elliott owns a large number of sheep which range in that part and is trying to have mr whitmore placed under bonds to keep keel the peace the grounds for his bis action are set forth I 1 in a his de deposition t ion taken by commissioner greenizan Gree ninan of which the following is the substance on sunday october 19 1890 1 I went with goo geo richmond to hunt deer in the cedars one of my sheep herds was movi moving lag u up 1 to get feed and water in charge of orson pace being at no great distance george mccall driving a wagon about a mile below Whit mores house got into conversation with orson pam pace who called to us and told us that mccall said there would be trouble if we went further up the creek and that whitmore would make it I 1 replied that I 1 would go along and see that be band I 1 and richmond went on ftp u the creek aud and kept near the herd when the latter pawed passed by Whit mores ranch he came out with two other men and swore at pace ordered him back and said he would get gee guns and drive him half an hour later I 1 saw whitmore and two other men armed rid bove ve T the ne herd ain in the canyon and t h he es sheep I 1 i back nd we ca earned that night about a mile and a hl hal ve Whit mores house and during t theu 6 ight b t whitmore and two other meir moved continually around our camp in the morning I 1 saw whitmore and another man approaching us with guns he sent a man named faucet to me unarmed who asked if I 1 intended to leave there I 1 replied not till the feed is 18 eaten up I 1 told him whitmore need not be afraid but might command come and speak to me if he would leave his bis guns whitmore came and said lie he was an american and not a cur and that I 1 was on his land I 1 said it ni was as not true and that the laud land was government land and that if it was tits his he hail bad recourse against me for trespass he said will you go I 1 replied when I 1 get feed and gatei elsewhere he said 41 force you to go then he said get your men I 1 wont stop to shoot until they come corner I 1 said ill fetch my men and will defend my property it if you attack it 1 I took a position with my men we could see whitmore anti and his men moving about with rifles but they did not come near before whitmore came to me that morning goo geo mccall had leveled a gun at orson pace and he be and whitmore had ordered him back on tuesday which was the next day whitmore said to me that he did not want bloodshed and I 1 agreed to leave with my sheep and on wednesday did so 1 I believe that whitmore is liable at any time to shoot me or my nien men when we are ranging or herding orson pace and george richmond made depositions corroborative of the above and it is under stood that process will issue requiring mr whitmore to show cause why he should not be required to give security to keep the peace |
