Show A RETIRING OFFICIAL JUDGE A B CARLTON ex chair man of the utah commission baa gone back to indianapolis where he intends to resume the practice of law ilaw he held the office which he has resigned for seven years he was appointed cr under a republican administration and continued to serve under the administration of president cleveland we have never heard of any dissatisfaction with his course expressed by the national natio aa authorities of either party he retires with the good feelings and best beat wishes of the people of utah who desire his future welfare of course judge carlton has enemies avery JE very public man of consequence e is sure to displease somebody but we believe there are none in utah who will speak against judge carlton except the few who assume to speak for the gentiles of the territory but only express the sentiments of a small body of radicals end and fanatics when their opposition is analyzed it resolves itself into these facts that judge carlton dissented from the policy of letro sectarian anti mormon ism into official reports to the government ern era ment ramt and of assuming awat ning ahat I 1 mormons cormons Mor mons who had mever violated the laws were insincere in efforts for the puttie public recognition of the la laws w s s supremacy up remae y he if favorer ohp th en those who worked for political harmony and would not endorse unsubstantiated and statements tending to prevent that harmony and to foster tho the false impressions existing concerning the majority of the people of this territory the ill will wih of those who have blackguarded black guarded and endeavored to injure and insult judge carlton cariton its a compliment to him and we have reason to believe that he so regards it they axe are unable to harm barm him in an any y w way 9 y or to aroused feeling of resentment for he stands above all such assaults and is not insulted by ay their abortive abw abuse there have been many things which judge carlton has at least assented to during bis his official career ta ia utah to which the mormons cormons Mor mons have taken exception and as it appeared with good reason but he be was not responsible to them mad and took his town lown course in ili these matters according to his own light anti and judgment and viewing his official acts in their entirety both mormons cormons Mor mons and gentiles who are conservative and reasonable respect him for his bis good qualities and general cousis consistency tency jand and will retain pleasant memories of his presence and relations with tn the people of utah may arc attend him in the day to tid come I 1 |
