Show DEATH OF GEO H PEXDICTOX 5 THE death of Hon George Hunt Pendleton icmoves from this stage C of action the last of the prominent statesmen of the war period He was born near Cincinnati in the year III and was therefore only a little over 61 years of age His wife I whom he married when ho was 21 was a daughter of Francis Scott Key author of the StarSpangled Banner and Roger B Taney once Chief Justice of the United States was her uncle It will thus be seen that Mr Pendle ton began his manhoods career J 1 well connected and as the sequel has shown happily so having an excellent education hi turned his I attention to the law and rose rapid ly In the profession In 1S54 Mr Pendleton began isle political career when he was elected to the Ohio State Senate He was subsequently elected to theXntiona House of Representatives in which ho served four terms the last one g ending in 1S55 He was nominated n nu u c n > > luent on the ticket wIth George B McClellan in 1SG4 and WAS a member of the legislative convention of 1S65 He ran for Governor of Ohio In 1S69 but was deflated was elected to the United States Senate I in 1S7S I and during this service was the I author of the civil servIce bill it which became n Jaw After the 1 t expiration of his senatorial term S I in 16S5 he was appointed by Presi 5 dent Cleveland minfcter to Germany Ger-many having but recently been re lieved by William Walter Phelpe His death occurred at Berlin where t he had served a full term as our J representative Jlr Pendleton was not In all n gpects a very brilliant man but his iI general ability and tterling qualities made him a conspicuous figure from the beginning of his political f career When only fortytwo years old In the House of Representatives Representa-tives he became the author of J a I scheme to pay the national debt in legal tenders instead of coin according il accord-ing to the bond this was denounced by > extreme loyalists as repudiation I 5 but be thought otherwise that what was good enough for the sol r diera who bad saved the Union ought to be good enough for those who bought the bonds This earned i for him among his associate and it t eoon spread throughout the land tho soubriquet of Young Greenbacks Green-backs In person Mr Fendleton was I tall and rather portly his full bearded face wore an expression of the utmost dignity and his deportment deport-ment at all times fully corresponded lIe was Instinctively as well as by training n statesman |
