Show RUINS NEAR RAMAH new N ew mexico visited and described 1 by G II 11 crosby I 1 receive along and consider it a credit to bountiful and an enterprising paper recently I 1 decided to take ft a stroll to some runis nuns below ramah so I 1 started after and walked two miles below baulah to a ruin which ties lies to the west of the valle valley y this ruin is built on oil tile hie level at th the c base of a little spur of the zuni zun moun talus this spur is of moderate elevation and sandstone formation the ruin is as near round as any I 1 lave have seen and sixty yards in ill diameter the entire structure being surrounded by a wall over two feet thie thick tle the rooms are generally about ten by twelve feet the cu tire space inside being taken up by rooms this ruin would seem to be the desolate home of not less than four hundred souls about twenty five steps northeast north east of the main ruin a cistern can be plainly traced it has had bad walled sides being circular in form a and ild twenty five feet in diameter it I 1 till still gathers some water from rainfall but the wind ard and rain have filled it almost full of sand the masonry is very rough stone being used entirely the internal arrangement shows no skill nor symmetry on oil the mountain spur the change I 1 was surprising on its top there is is a wall running due north and south feet long which is built of hewn stone rivaling our masonry for beauty while at each end a bastion joi joined n ed on oil to the main wall the one at the north ind and was ab about out feet the southern one being on oil the amt lof of this wall their was no ruins at all but on the cast a row of houses utilized this as for one wall and extended to tile hie edge of the hill on oil the bill side below ruins were to be seen amon among several sandstone cliffs and broken pieces of sandstone we are told in the conquest of new mexico that when caronado the cortez of tew gew 31 mexico exico came up tip this valley with his bis army the natives formed a line across the valley to dispute the way with the troops they solemnly protested against them PaS passing bassill Sill g A spaniard pushed his comrade through the line and the natives killed him this was a signal for a fight which ended in reducing tile the inhabitants to one fifth their original number slid and leaving the towns in ruins with the dead bodies of the unhappy azteca aztecs buried beneath the walls and roofs of their ruined houses the few that remained were taken take to zuni and now are not known from froin these their children know not which tribe they belonged to before the spanish conquest at zuni the spaniards ards left a garrison of men to force the zunis to subjection anti and quell any any re rewellien bellien that might occur they also left a catholic priest to build a church and convert them to Cat catholicism holicis in their method of converting U thein was to compel them to attend mass bow before the virgins image anti and put crosses over their doors maragas at one lime governor over nor of these pueblos said in it asking for more troops you might 0 as well try to convert tile the without an inquisition as indians without soldier cri ube the indians kept up till an all outward show of belief but still their gods and as for us possible tinged catholicism with their idolatrous belief still do they retain them and mission teachers find cud it very hard bard to overcome these even an impossibility in one life time an ali earnest minister of catholicism was tenc lAug one of the villagers the godly doctrine of love thy ene enemies atiles his reply was why mess liless yo your ur heart father allier I 1 alit vet any enet enemies nies I 1 have killed them every one the dithe indian traditions are also opposed to the teachings of whiles for they consider eon sider themselves the superior class of the two the next lay day after visiting these ruins being saturday I 1 decided to visit some other ruins about four miles above Rai nali having arrived at the ruins at 0 9 a in I 1 proceeded to examine them they their consisted of wro two parts both built in fort style the larger was square yards standing with willi the cardinal points the rhe houses consisted of four tiers one on oil each side of the fort appear to have used hie lile fort wall as one wall of their house two avro rows running north anti and half isalt across the fort complete the houses and ill show more symmetry in the arrangement than any ruins I 1 have as yet visited A line of ruins leads from the north cast corner of this to the other part which is circular in form showing a lack of symmetry liy by its inner arrangement 0 the here was medium catli r above lie he average I 1 had been told that about ads from these ruins steps up tip a Rand sandstone stone cliff were quite plain and turning turning my eyes in that direction I 1 could see sec a hight flight very plainly so I 1 went over where they acie it ere the belloni ones were gone so I 1 could not get to them but wanted my feet to patter up tip those time worn notches so I 1 decided to climb up a crevice near by this crevice had some shallow rooted grass in ill but I 1 pulled and kicked it out as I 1 went up when I 1 had reached almost the top I 1 came in contact with a smooth slanting rock up tip which I 1 could not climb so I 1 began to descend the grass being gene I 1 had bad but little chance to steady myself against gravitis grav itys force so I 1 prec i 1 i I 1 Y obeyed that force with a ro roll 1 I 1 which ended in a gracious sand dune seeing a more gentle slope I 1 thought thou glit I 1 could reach the top by climbing up tip it I 1 began and toon soon noticed another flight fight 43 of steps close by I 1 climbed over to these anti and upon examination found I 1 could walk on them to the hill top when I 1 reached the top I 1 followed down them and found thirty eight in ill the flight well preserved while e five were worn so that only traces could be seen much of tile the way a trail run along the rock having been cut as the steps had been I 1 then went to a Alex mexican ican house near by and returned a shovel I 1 had borrowed I 1 was asked to sit down fleich I 1 did two we Ilex mexican ican gentlemen who were present akca tile me if I 1 liked music I 1 replied I 1 did they a guitar and violin and played several really pretty tunes tiey they were characteristic Alexi mexicans cans dacre music being V very gay lively dance tunes the fourth a sweet love song with willi a very feeling strain I 1 can call but bai x admire their sweet simple ditties while their love songs are always sung sling with leclire feeling generally laving having lovely words to them 11 II CROSBY jr JIL |
