Show Forum January 31, 1986 ram Jisia5mFSig IF ' Westminster College is making its second attempt at gaining funds for revamping campus buildings. Through a bill introduced into the state legislature by State Sen. Richard Carling, Lake City, Westminster would receive $1.1 million. Although there was talk last year that if Westminster received the funding it would be R-S- alt used to ren&vate Ferry Hall so that it could be reopened for classrooms and offices, this year there are no definite plans on where the money will be spent Westminster President Charles Dick has indicated that it will probably be used for improvements in both Converse and Foster halls. I f r. I r h i Page 3 In addition to this, there is the fact that Utahs public institutions of higher education are already overcrowded. The University of Utah must place a ceiling on the number of new students that it can accept and ends up turning away some students who wish to further their education. The students that Westminster brings to Utah also benefit the state with the tuition and living expense dollars that they spend here. As the bill is written, schools that are operated for a profit, are state schools or are religiously affiliated would not qualify for this type of financial assistance. Also, schools must offer at least a two-yedegree and meet the same standards that state schools do in order to qualify for funding. The funding for the schools that meet all of the criteria (Westminster is the only one) will be allocated by the legislature on an annual basis when it determines that there is a need. e Therefore, this will probably be just a appropriation. But the bill has yet to pass both houses of the Legislature. Those who are familiar with Utah politics say that the bill will probably pass in the state Senate without too much trouble, as it did last year. It is in the state House of Representatives that the bill is expected to face oppo- out-of-sta- te ar What is definite is that Westminster has a need for more classrooms. With more classroom space, the college can continue to increase enrollment without having to increase class sizes. And with increased enrollment the college will be in a better position to continue to improve its financial position. But the bill, the Utah Financial Assistance Act for Nonpublic Institutions, isnt just good for us as students, employees and alumni of Westminster, It is estimated that it would cost the state of Utah an extra $2 million annually to educate the resident students at Westminster if they were to attend public institutions of higher education. one-tim- t 1Q21 -- J. sition. And it is there that the Westminster community can again target their efforts. g Last year ASWC sponsored a campaign in which students, faculty, staff and alumni were asked to sign which were then sent to legislators. This year a new approach is being tried. The Forum is soliciting members of the Westminster community to "hand-writ- e letters to the legislators from their district. The letters will be deposited in a box in Shaw Center next to d the information booth and then to legislators on the day the bill is expected to be introduced. and Having the letters will hopefully prevent them from being thrown out before being read. While the idea of actually writing a letter may sound difficult, its really, fairly easy. You are living in Utah, what the heck do you want at this time of year a heat wave? Dont get your hopes up. Utah, for better or for worse, is commonly known for its winters. Does the above statement come as a shock g to any of the whiners out there? It must, tir they would have realized the futility of their continual complaining about the pesky powder. Now dont get me wrong; Im not saying that these people didnt know what they were getting into when they signed up for duty on the good ship Utah, more than likely they rationalized that it couldnt be that bad . . . and then they woke up. Could it be that Im assuming too much? Could it perhaps be that these people are somehow trapped here against their will? Presumably something equally as drastic is occurring to hold them here for in todays age of the mobile society there is no such thing as I cant move." er snow-hatin- I , i t I serves state funding (several possible reasons have already been mentioned in this editorial). It wont take much of your time, you wont need to dig out your typewriter and it wont hurt As we wrote in our editorial on the same subject last year, The Westminster community is made up of many different types of people with many different interests. But, hopefully, one thing we all have in common is a concern for our college. We dont care why you write your letter, just do it now! It wont take long and it wont hurt You can find out the name of your state representative by calling the County Elections Clerk at 535-765- 5. We dont often get a chance to rally for our college at Westminster. Lets not miss this important opportunity to do so. The Forum Staff Jaffie Mips WMiaers real-wint- l: Fi? Bill Thats right if the snow irritates you to the point that you feel you just cant deal with it anymore move. It is a fact of life and a combination of geographic location and climatic conditions that keeps it snowing in Utah . . .and I hope it keeps right on snowing. Gnashing your teeth at night over shoveling your sidewalk two days in a row will not make the new morning snowfall melt any faster . . . nor will bitching about it every time it snows. The idea as a topic of conversation gets old to those of us that love the snow, or who have learned to accept the annual white stuff. In conclusion (and consideration of possible rising blood pressures) may I make a suggestion to those of you who are not fond of Mother Nature's winter coat: love it or leave it. If you dont want to be where the snow is you certainly dont have to be., But for those of us who welcome winter would the rest of you please give it a rest. No one wants to hear you beat your dead horse; so shovel your driveway and grumble quietly to yourself ...or make plans to move. I know its lovely in Texas this time of year yall hear now?
