Show THE WESTERN MINERAL SURVEY, SALT LAKE CITY, UTAH, 1943 Coal Output Expected To Surpass U. S. Production Of 1918 A copper-silver-ti- u GIVEN, (Coal Age) Coal met all wartime demand In 1942 with a total output expected to exceed 625,000,000 short tons, made up of about 665,000,000 tons of bituminous and 60,000,000 tons of Pennsyl-vanl- a anthracite. The Increase In both Industries was approxt mttely 10 per cent over the 1941 totals of 511,290,000 tons of bituminous coal and 54,351,000 tons of Pennsylvania anthracite. . California Miners Seek Moratorium Advices from Los Angeles are to tiie effect that state and federal authorities will he petitioned by California miners to adopt legislation which will establish for the duration a moratorium on all contractural agreements of mine operators of mining companies in California. In Jan-uai-y the California Legislature will be urged by the Mining Association of the Southwest and the California Mining Association of San Francisco to establish such a moratorium because at the recent federal order which .required moat at the gold properties to cease work. At Its annual dinner meeting In Loa Angeles a few daya ago the Mining Association of the Southwest voted unanimously In favor of such a moratorium, and will advise congressmen and senators in Washington that It favors making such a moratorium nation-widIt also will support federal legislation to extend the moratorium on mining claims assessment work for the duration, because a year ago It asked for such a moratorium to extend six months beyond the duration of the war. Earl Goodwin, formerly ' of Guadalajara, and James M. Hyde, who Is operating In Sonora, talked on the outlook for small mine In various parts of operation Mexico. Both were of the belief that anyone desiring to engage In the mining of strategic mineral will receive hearty cooperation from the Mexican govern- ment. They declared that such strategic aa they might produce or accumulate would find a -ready market with the United States government Bituminous production In 1943 I forecast at 800,000,000 tons by Solid Fuels Coordinator for War Ickes on the basis of estimated demands by railroads, utilities, steel and other industries. If achieved, thle production will be a new record for the bituminous industry of the United States. The previous high was' 579,385,820 tons In 1918. Pennsylvania anthracite also la expected to mark up another substantial, gain In 1943, with some forecasters placing the expected total at 65,000,000 tons or more. Although hampered by lose of manpower and growing difficulty In securing materials, and equipment, it la expected that both industries will reach these goals, provided transportation la available and there la no substantial further cut In manpower and materials. The 1942 output was made possible by the heavy expenditures for mechanical mining and preps ration equipment made In prior years, including during the depression, which went Air toward compensating for a loss of over 80,000 men In coal mining in 1942 and 5,000 or more In Pennsylvania anthracite. . Mechanization and modernization in both mining and preparation continued In 1942 aa far as equipment was available. In view of its character, reflected among other things by the faqt. that coal Is taking over tha industrial power and load which oil shortage has necessitated converting, mining haa enjoyed progressively higher and higher priority ratings. One major move In 1942 to Insure continued capacity to produce was a relaxation of restrictions on working time by the United Mine Workers to permit men to work more than five days a week. In the more critical areas of the Far West, seven-day schedules were agreed upon, and In December operators and miners were working out the details of y schedules In the East In cooperation with the Office of Price - Administration, which was prepared to lift ceilings to take care of tha add- eentii home-heatin- Tungsten- ( Continued From Page 2) neer from the Sail Lake office of the U. 8. Bureau of Mines, Inspected the Roberson property in September and recommended that exploratory work be undertaken by the government to ascertain as quickly as posslbla the amount of tungsten ore available for government use. A few weeks later, Eugene Frey, Bureau of Mines engineer, arrived at the Romur" property with a crew of men to commence an exploratory tunnel for the Bureau of Mines which will serve to establish the extent of the ore bodies. Meanwhile, since the Bureau of Mines had given Its approval as to the merit of the property, requests from U, S. Sen. J. C. O'Mahoney and Mr. Keahey brought engineers from the Bureau of Public ROads at Denver office of . and from the. Wyoming the division of grazing, to visit the area for the purpose of deciding on the need for a mineral access road to the claims sd that mining equipment could be taken in and the ore trucked out An amendment to the defense highway act, passed in July, set up a fund of (10,000,000 for the construction of access roads to strategic minerals. R. H. Rut ledge, director of the division of is Interested in the grazing, access roada program minerals throughout the west as being a valuable contribution to the war effort where Justified by sufficient amounts of strategic minerals. Minimum-pric- e schedules for bituminous coal, under the terms of the Bituminous Coal Act of 1937, were lifted in September, the weighted average increase for the United States being 15.53c. per net tons, with regional increases ranging from 5 to 30c. per ton. Further increases in coat of production announced later hinted action to come. Pennsylvania an- thracite worked throughout the year under a stabilization plan providing for fixing week by week the tonnage to be produced and allocating It among the mining companies.
