Prof. James L. Barker, our last year's principal, was the first of these speakers to address the student body. He came at the request of the student body otficers and certainly delivered a wonderful message. The applause that ensued when "James L." entered the resurrected assembly hall was indicative of the respect and friendship the students have for their former principal. Ex-Principal Barker was just as informal and good-natured as ever and this the students appreciated. He ac first complimented the school on the improvements and then plunged with enthusiasm into the message his heart had for them. He developed a well organized, original thoit, viz: That the present war was bringing about thru force the sfime things as Mormonism was bringing about thru love. As an example he re-referred to the Gospel's plan for the United Order" and pointed out that the same order was virtually taking llace now on the different fronts as a result of force. At our Christmas program we were certainly favored by the presence of our ex-principal, and now president of the board of education, David O. McKay; and Lewis W. Shurtliff, formerly president of our board of education, and now, Together with John Watson, the oldest member in years ol service, on the same board. Previous to the delivery of addresses by these staunch supporters of this institution, the Weber college orchestra rendered "Homestead Melody," and "Happy New Year." Both numbers were a favorable surprise to the students. President Shurtliff related a few experiences of pioneer life and concluded by saying that the best way of erecting a monument in their honor would be to emulate their example.President McKay analyzed the lives of Christ and his apostles and pointed out that the ideal to which they owed most of their true success was loyalty. With these examples as the premise, he urged us to be loyal to our institution, which means that we should always suggest improvements for the school and support any movement which will improve conditions. The talks of both these great leaders were greatly appreciated, not as some sometimes indiscreetly say, "because we miss Theology," but because the speakers breathed good practical theology from start to fin ish. We hope that these founders of cur school will visit us more often. The first long devotional after the holidays was featured by the talk of Prof. C. J. Jensen. Having visited Camp Kearney during the Xmas va cation, Prof. Jensen was in a position to describe army life vividly and the expectations of the students were in no way shattered. "Uhe WEBER FLORAL Thane FOUR-ONE-O - QREENHOUSE, 740 28ih St. BRIEF MENTION A number of former students were visitors about town during the Christmas holidays. Among the number were: Prudence Roberts, Halvy Bach-man, Vern Owen, John McCune, Homer Eccles, Sterling Tilford and Vernal Anderson. Word has reached the staff that Alice Stahr, a popular graduate of last year, is to be married Jan. 31. The name of the lucky man could not be secured, but it is understood he is a member of the Senior class of a law school in California, where Miss Stahr is now living. Anyway, what is there in a name. "Woodrow" Wilkinson substituted for Mayor Heywood as a speaker in the recent Red Cross drive. "Wood-row" is right at home with the dignitaries.Prof. Kasius has received recognition from the local draft board and was listed in class 1. "Pete" is always first-class in every undertaking. Wranted Another nickname for the editor. He has eleven now and desires another to make up the dozen. WTeber again took North Ogaen Into camp by a score of 66 to 6 in a g,ame of basket ball played during the holidays. The squad from the state deaf and blind school also suf fered defeat at the hands of the Purple and White to the tune of 4S-12. No M is-Spelled Word Contest Owing to the fact that the editor and business manager of the Herald are in Provo (permanently) with the school piay, the usual mis-spelled V'ord contest will not be held in this issue. No one found the mis-spelled word in the last issue and the money was given to the Red Cross. The word was "account" in the Ogden Savings Bank ad. Pres. Wilkinson, Czar Winters and the editor of the Herald wish to thank the members of the domestic science dept., who so graciously served them with chocolate, apples and cookies, Tuesday of last week. SOMETHING EVERYBODY KNOWS Liewellyn has a love for Mamie, Such as words can never tell, But this match is not one-sided, For she likes him very well. Llewellyn had a reputation For his lessons well prepared In the meshes laid by Cupid, All his thoughts are now ensnared. Morn till night they stand and whisper,Yes, they are cooing all the time, Way down in the Study Hall They together always dine. Love for breakfast and for supper, Dinner too must have its share, Then another meal at seven And a walk in the evening air. Then next morn at seven-thirty, When Lou joins his early class He looks so worn and tired All the students cry alas(?) Talk about- the ancient martyrs Dying for the love of men, Llewellyn's losing all for Mamie, And the wedding day is when? CO. Never "Disappoints You - where the Flowers Grow STORE. 2463 Wash.
