"We haven't yet turned our attention during the conference to Native American civil rights and equality," stated Michael Minch, assistant professor of philosophy and member of the MLK Commemoration Advisory Board. 14 As a prestigious spokesperson for Native American rights, Mr. Echohawk is a perfect fit for our Commemoration." Errin Julkunen Ed itor-at- Large Hanna Hooge/NetXNews UVSC student Salah Mclean came up witha new way to wax snowboards. Now his idea is a reality. Wax on: Student invents a new way to wax boards Hanna Hooge Feature Writer A professor once told me that at least eight people will come up with similar ideas for an invention before someone else actually acts on it. Salah Mclean, a 24 year-old Behavioral Science major, is not in that eight. He won't let an idea pass him by. He acts. Hanna- You're an inventor? Salah- Somewhat, I guess. Ha ha. I don't try to be, it just came. Hanna- How did that happen? Salah- Well last semester I had three roommates that snowboarded, and they were hot waxing their snowboards. They take a bar of wax and an iron, melt the wax on their board and then iron over it, wait and scrape it all off. It took them about 45 minutes to an hour. The fastest I ever heard of anyone doing it was 20 minutes. I would never ever do a sport if it took me that long to get ready, and I thought there had to be an easier way. Then the idea just came. It allows you to hot wax a board in about two minutes. Hanna- Can you tell me a little bit about the "idea"? Salah- It's just a product that you iron on your board and then peel off. You eliminate the first step of melting the bar, and it protects your iron so you don't ruin it. Plus you don't have to scrape off all the excess wax in the end. It puts a little bit more than the perfect amount to fill in cracks and stuff. Hanna- What are you doing with the product now? Salah- I worked with 10 different companies in America to start out with, but none of them could manufacture the product. So then I went to India. India said they could, but then something got lost and it took forever. I was almost going to give up. Then one day I was sitting in the computer lab here at the school and had the feeling to look online. I did, and found a company in Massachusetts that does it, and they made it amazing. They make it better than my •idea was in the beginning. Hanna- In your wildest dreams, what do you hope will happen with this? Salah- I just don't want to have to worry about money. My dad left when I was just one year old, and my mom worked hard for us her whole life. Now she is in heavy debt and I just want to pay off all her debts. I finally got out of her what her favorite car is too, a Dodge Durango. .1 want to get her a silver, fully loaded Durango that is just so nice. Plus give her a little extra cash in the bank. Also, did you know it only costs like 30 grand to build a school in Africa? So, I want to go over there and do a little humanitarian aide. Hanna- So you are planning on giving back a lot of what you earn? Salah- Okay, you really want to know the whole basis of what I want to do? I know how hard it is to start a company when you come from a poor background. I was thinking how many people I know that don't have the opportunity to come to college and have more talent then those that do. What I want to do once I have enough money is help those people out. All they need is guidance. I want to do take one person and help them, make them a marketer, form their life. Then after I do that and they become successful, they have to do it for someone else. Hanna- Like a "Pay it Forward" kind of thing? Salah- Yeah, but all the people that become a part of it there will be a big trade agreement. So if someone over here does something with computers and someone over there works in whatever else, they can trade services at no cost. You know, that kind of a thing. Hanna- You sound like a true humanitarian. Salah- No. Ha ha. I just do what I can. David Gergen, former White House advisor, will speak Jan. 13 at 7 p.m. in the Utah Valley State College Ragan Theater. Panels and presentations will cover issues such as whiteness theory, gay rights, civil rights violations faced by Japanese Americans during World War II, the suffrage movement, etc. "Since the Commemoration traditionally highlights the work of UVSC students and faculty and community members, its program tends to reflect what's on people's minds," says Simmons. "Last year there were several papers on the PATRIOT Act and other issues related to terrorism and the Iraq war. This year, our panel titled l Gay Rights as Civil Rights' probably reflects the recent discussions about gay marriage in our society."
