No nation or people has hail a monopoly on heroes or hero worship. At sundry times and in almost unknown corners of the earth have appeared high spirited souls who have sacrificed every possession, even life itself, to maintain honor and integrity, both for themselves and for their country. Britain has had them like stars in the firmament of British history. France has had her share. And American patriots are as shining lights for all to see by. But now in a modern world beset' by new which are as old in their methods as history itself, although they inflict their will by new tools of force, we stand amazed and our faith in humankind is enlarged by the transfiguration of Greece and the Serbs. Here are two brilliant examples in a world filled with espionage, fifth columnists, and saboteurs, of patriotism in action, of inlmrn hatred of oppressions rising in unmatched loyalty, standing under the shadows of the Oppressors bombers, before the very mouths of his cannons, and daring to call him by his true name: Tyrant alnd Despoiler. Mussolini and Hitler have each more than met their match, met it in the most unexpected place, by a simple peasant people who dare exalt liberty above any other possession on this earth. Here are simple peoples, whose minds are unclouded and whose hearts are loyal and true, who fear not to face issues of life and death because they know no price is too great for freedom, and no conceivable reward is great enough to make slavery seem good. A little child shall lead them is true again, for the simple things of earth are our greatest teachers. They bring us book to a realization of what it fundamentally worthwhile in life. Sometimes we get o wrapped up in our selves, In our business, in our ctmoeits that we see true values dimly, and our desires fuid fear take mastery ever us. Hen in little Greece and the poor mountain lands of Serbia Champion masters. Already France has paid two or three times the total reparations asked by France of Germany at the close of World War Number 1. in But Franco is paying the price of peace more drastic measures yet. The daily bread ration of the French has been reduced from 300 to 240 grams, effective April 1, and will remain at the old ration of 240 grams in the unoccupied zone. At the same time meat is reduced 20 per cent, each person now being allowed 12 tickets a month, which gives him 3.18 qunce8 of meat a month. Butter, eggs, and fruits are all rationed, the Government already starting to build up a reserve for next winter out of these meager supplies. Special jolice are empowered to enforce these regulations, not only upon the restaurant keejters, but also upon individuals, with power to fine them on the spot, if violations of the rationing orders be found anywhere. Such is the price France is paying for its peace terms with Hitler. Its a vivid lesson in international relationships to America. . again the greatest things in life, for they point the wy to liberty and personal freedom with such i. dear virion that even the blind cut see. dfciao a. I I THE FRIGE THET PAID .. France knows' what peace eosts. Before the Germans over ran their bind the French had a total note circulation of 130,000,000,00 francs. Today the 0 Yicfay goveriflncfit has been forced to borrow francs to pay for. German ooeupation costs. Vichy is paying 400000,000 franc doily for the upkeep of! the German troops in France. Those troops 100,000,-.000,00- are, there to protect the French from the British. In addition to these assessments against the French, reports from neutrals indicate that France is paying . algo fpr tbe keep of 200100 to 300,000 French soldiers .imprisoned .by Germany, and also to support thous- onds of French workers who have been taken to Germany to work in German fields as slaves for their BAUSON SEES PEACE IN ' FRED E.
