took place in the court room to vo ibe advisability of placing in tin bield 1 ticket for the coming municipal it was pat the announced time before a number f the party was present to effect an organization but by the time the meeting was duly under way there was a fair representation present J bjone was called tu the chair and H A koon acted as secretary mr zayid evans started the ball rolling by introducing the following resolutions whereas under the policy of the peoples party the so called drug stores of this city have grown within the past dx years from one unprofitable store with small aix of large stocks and all doing a thriving profitable business and whereas in our opinion at least 90 per cent of the b transacted by these stores consists in the sale of alcoholic liquors and whereas the professed policy of the peoples Peo pies in prohibiting the eale of bubli liquors has been a signal failure and beuda to foster the liquor traffic and put it upon the market free from lie cenice and whereas we believe that under existing circumstances the real sentiments of the majority of the people are unfavorable to prohibiting laws ie it resolved that in our opinion high license under strict regulations ions ische best method of curtailing existing evils flowing from the prohibitory policy of the peoples party will improve the intemperance of the community m beneral pe and greatly replenish an already ardly depleted treasury and to this end we cordially invite the support of the voters of thia city and aak their cooperation with us in electing city officers who will faithfully carry out the policy in this resolution defined the gentleman stated in support of hia resolution that all good citizens should be united on a question for the best public good the liquor question was not only affecting the morals of the community but also tho taxpayers but six years ago was but one drug store in provo and that one found it uphill business to succeed now we have no less than five all in a prosper perou condition A drug store can not thrive the way they are doing unless they sold liquor by facts and figures carefully ascertained it is found eliat mas been paid by proprietors of drug stores for liquors bold in prove per cent is the clear profit made from retailing liquor this amount would reach paid by the citizens of this place for the drug As there are people in bovo povo this sum divided would be 10 pec capita but say only one of every five persons indulge then the proportion weald be 50 per capita after the expenses of clerk hire and other items are paid there would be a clear profit from the sales of liquor alone to eacle drug store proprietor of during last year the city has collected 50 for fines under the prohibitory ordinance of the amount 25 was remitted consequently there was only paid into the city treasury the sum of 25 for violations of the law the costs of prosecuting these cases reached the difference between these two sums was paid by the taxpayers while the liquor sellers were making all the mon ey in clear profits it not be bet berlo terlo have a high license than con kinoe this farce of prohibition i dr jimmona could not see the policy of exaggeration to get at the facts the gentleman denied emphatically the assertion that 90 per cent of the business done by the drug stores wag from the sales of liquor he had kept drugs and liquor sales entirely separated and some six months ago I 1 found that only one ninth of the sales were liquor while since that date liquor sales had ed hd mr evans asked the gentleman been into drug stores to get hia figures he was not in favor of exaggerating ge rating facts and figures to work any public good undoubtedly license was the test policy but he was not in favor of exaggerating to effect it mr A G sutherland did not coincide with the revolutions because they consisted 0 arguments without foundation it stated what the policy of the peopled party wasand WA aasand Sand the speaker did not pretend to assert that it bad been made known it seemed ridiculous for a handful of liberals to ask a large majority like the peoples party to help the liberals elect their ticket the speaker then reviewed the history of use drug store business in provo from the commencement the officers never have had the moral t of the people iii enforcing prohibition then how can they make it a success the speaker stated he favor of a lush license under strict regulations showing that the probabilities were that the young men being seen by passersby passers by would lie ashamed to be found drinking mr it S hi nes stated that he opened the second drag store in provo and did so to accommodate the many strangers that were in town at that time as it was when the X R G was being built mr george sutherland stated that it was a physical impossibility in a town the size of provo for six or seven stores to engage n a drug even salt lake only had at the most isolen drof stores if then there are six drug in a place that can only sustain one legitimate dru store some other business must be carried on to make it a success from spent a year ago in tho enforcement of the prohibition law but had been received in fines if we cannot make a success of prohibition let the next best and that is hia license arr davi vans seated in support of his resolutions th what bs had asserted from information gained from sources resolutions yere put to the house but failed to carry sir geo sutherland then offered the follow ingi Ees olied that we favor a aih license system under strict regulations as being for the best interests of this community from business moral and temperance standpoints after considerable discussion the resolution was withdrawn and the following as a same gentleman the liberal party of thia city will rive its supporting sup the coming municipal election to an independent citizens ticket on the platform of high license under strict regulations R S hines and A G sutherland strongly opposed this re solimon and it served the fate of its predecessor Jrp arid vans 1 IN following this meeting proceed to elect lect thirteen delegates three from
