Weekly Newspaper, Devoted to the Interests of the Leading Agric .ilfural and Horticultural Section of Utah-''The Garden of the West.' VOLUME M4 NUMBER 7 The Tickets Tlie two political parties of Springville each have a munici pal ticket in the fit-Id for the sufferage of the voters, Nov. 3rd. Without reviewing I he personnel person-nel of. f-ach ticket, it is sufficient to say, that every man on either ticketj a good, true nd competent com-petent citizen, one worthy of the trust of his fellow citizens. Already their are rumors of "Scrtchiug." There certainly ought not to btf any question about the propriety of voting the party ticket straight this year. What can a voter hope to gain by scratching (he name of a party man, and inserting t henji'neof a political opponent? oppo-nent? "Scratching" is ouly a cowardly expression of personal spite in most cases. Think of it! I don't like a man on the ticket, not because he is not a good man for the place, but I have had some personal difficulty difficul-ty with him: I enter the voting booth 4ind vent my suite by scratching the helpless name upon a piece of paper! Mirabel lictu! The men being go d upon either ticket, let partisans vote it straight. Either party if elected el-ected can be trusted to do their level best for the advancement and prosperity of our City. The "nigger in the woodpile" seems to be the liquor question. The Republicans offer the ouly sensible solution to this important impor-tant question, viz: that of submitting sub-mitting it to the vote of the people; peo-ple; promising to carry out 6trenuously the peoples' desires, an expressed at the ballot box. The execution of the anti-liquor laws for the Inst two years has been almost a failure, and the reason therefore is loudly proclaimed pro-claimed to be that the popular sentiment is against their enforcement. en-forcement. It is a well known fact that an unpopular law cannot can-not be enforced. Popular sen timent nun?rbj"tehTd' the elective, el-ective, or law is a "dead letter" Those who favor licensed traffi:: rather limn prohibition say, "A very small minority presisi in forcing their views upon an overwhelming majority." The prohibitionists say, "An' unscrupulous un-scrupulous minority ins:st!upon forcing saloons upon an ever-whelniinir ever-whelniinir m-i-irit v." And there you are. Now the only way to ascertain the honest views t the pet-pie, and get them fearlessly fear-lessly expressed, is to Mibmit it-. it-. to a special election. No fair-mii-dd citizen desires to foice Lis individual views upon an ''overwhelming majority," but is willing to submit public ques tions to the ''referendum;" because be-cause in this government the majority rule is right, jlf pro hibitiou is not popular !to our people, we have a right to) find it out; if a majority' want it', let us know it. You have the pledge (of one party to ascertain the honest sentiments of the people on the question, and also to give the people a strenuous enforcement of the law as "expressed by the vox populi. Don't scratch your ticket, vote it straight. . t'ur! iVintcr Cn?li --'i. E. I see the high licence writers in the paper of the 15th have managed so that poor Henry had to father it. We officers. are painfully aware that in many of the doubtful cases the iiihii who had the heart to Jo with it, has been made the scapegoat, and this right 'along the line of high licence deductions. Someone Some-one hs told Henry that the Government sanctions the manufacture manu-facture of liquor, and grants license li-cense to dealers. That is. true; liquors are largely used in the arts and sciences, though his informant in-formant may not know that thsy are used in any way but as a beverage. The Government also sanctions the manufacture and licenses the sale of deadlv drus ami poisons, but under wise restrictions re-strictions that the unwary may not be trapped or the foolish lslain. I would like to add u little lit-tle to Henry's stock of inform i-tion i-tion bv calling his attention to the fact that the wards of the Government who Uncle Sam is' trying to civilize and grade up to a dace of usefullness are not allowed saloons. This is a positive pos-itive proof J hat the wise men who conduct this government do not consider liquor-a civiliz-er civiliz-er A century of experiment of a more or less -disastrous nature na-ture has resulted in the banishment banish-ment of (he "canteen," or grogshop grog-shop from the army, and ihe substitution in its stead of canned can-ned fruits with gratifying results. re-sults. One of the cities that attempted to go the Goverment one better, had an eloquent man speak in a public meeting on the revenue that would accrue "to the city from licenced houses of pros i ution. One woman arose from the body of the hall and 8aid: "Whose daughters, pray, tire to fall to fill the houtes, I am nut willing that you should pave your streets with the soul? of my sons and daughters." This' truly humane cry went to the soul of every father and mother present and saved the city from eternal infamy. While I would not bum money mon-ey that did not beloug to me, I believe that it would be better for a man and his family to burn money than spend it in a saloon, and 1 am sure in the long run it would be better for Springville should he di-spuse-of it in that way.
