At the first tone of the cannon the fla of the Republic greeted greet-ed the cool breezes, and the sweet strains of music from the Military hand were wafted to the ears of the patriotic thousands of Springville's citizens. At 9 a. in. the final and signal gun proclaimed the houi for assembly at the Citv Hall park, where hundreds uere already gathered. At 'J:30 the orocession was formed under the leadership of David 0. Crarsdall, the. marshal of the day., in the following order: Maccabee Military hand; ''Goddess of Liberty," Miss EltU; Huntiuyton, mounted upon a white horse with superb trappings, with the "Army and Navy" on either side at the bridle bits; hirteen Original Colonies." Colo-nies." in costume, lead by Miss Kath-ryn Kath-ryn Johnson: the "Forty-flve States," represented by young ladies ia whie, lead by ' Utah," Miss Etta Johnson on horseback; ''Cuba." Miss Frances liird, mounted; City authorities; Mormon IJatallion; "Philippines," Miss l'riei Packard, mounted; "Porto Hi jo," Miss Mabel Warthen, mounted; mount-ed; bands of Filipino bo s and girls; "Hawaii," Miss Alice St reeper.mount- d; Sunday Schools under various superintendents; Relief Society; V. C. T. U.; boys and girls on bicycles; Indians. Cuba, Porto Rico, Hawaii and Philippines were each escorted, by Volunteers at the bridle bits. The procession was a very picturesque one and made a most imposing spectacle as it countermarched on. State street, viewed by hundreds of admiring people. At 10-3f o'clock the spacious meeting meet-ing house was packed with the various delegations and citizens. Never did the people of Springvilfe piiseitt a more animated or picturesque pictur-esque appearance. David Craiidall, marshal of the day, acted as master of ceremonies. James E Hall offered the invocation. invoca-tion. The congregation under the direction of Prof. Harrison, sang "America." I. C. Johnson made an address ou the Declaration of Independence, Inde-pendence, after which Mis Etta Johnson sang "Star Spangled Bjiiiier" with chorus by the .audience. Prof. L. E E, gen. son delivered a stirring oration, full of praise for the brave tp. n and women who have battled to lnal.o ( i.r country honored and respected, re-spected, and have advanced her to li.e drst station among the nations o! t ,!.' v.! r 1 h. A beautiful feature ol the program was the "National Scarf D. ii.,"by 15 young yirls under the direction of Mrs. Ileiia U i. lance. The atblress in behalf of the "Thirteen Colonies" by Miss Kathryn Johnson, was much apni 1 ciated. Miss Etta Johnson sang "The Sword of Hunker II iii" and was heartily applauded. The assembly then sang "The Red, White and IJluo." Cheers were given for "Our Country," its defenders and for the motheis of ".Oar Soldier I!os". after which the chaplain pro-uounced pro-uounced the benediction. The -afternoon was spent at the City Hail park, where, hundreds, old and young, enjoyed a wholesale visit during-the afternoon hours. The Maccabee baud discoursed sweet music. Ice cream, soda water and choice con feet ionery were in .abundance. .abund-ance. The day tutimrly closed with a display of tirewoiks from the Ciiy Hall. The Fourth ended well at Mapleton. The spicy proy.rani was ably carried to a finish; probably the most interesting feature of the clay was the musical contest. The prize given to the person who could play a tune on the greatest variety of instruments was awarded to Wayne Johnson, who "dug up" a tune out of thirteen different diff-erent musical instruments. More ice cream and other refreshments refresh-ments were consumed here at Maple-ton Maple-ton than on any other day in the history of this "bustling burg," proving prov-ing that the appetite is growing with the population. A very pleasant ball is now ia progress at Wallace Johnson's John-son's opera house. Many couples from Springviile are present. A History of SprlngTille. It is proposed to write up and publish pub-lish in bc-ok form from The Independent Inde-pendent Office the history of Springviile Spring-viile during the first 50 years of the community's life. Sept. 13 will be the fiftieth anniversary of the city's birth, and the work is opportune.
