Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Black- OUR STREIIGTII I hope you notice that this column has a new heading this week. This has been more or less adopted as the Trademark of the Soil Conservation Service and you will be seeing more and more of it I dont want to get started preaching, but I think Our Soil Our the quotation be over emcannot Strength phasized. When you come right down to it, the civilation of the world is based on the few inches of soli that grows the things we eat, ware, and use for shelter. Near the first of each month, I try to give a report on the irrigation water outlook for this vicinity: based on the Snow Surveys made on the first of each month by the Soil Conservation Service, State Engineer, and the Experiment Station. I dont have to tell the most of you that the water prospects for the coming year are not good In Southern Utah. Every day, I hear someone commenting on how long it has been since we had a storm. The other day, however, Donald Swapp topped the stories I have heard on our perpetual drought He had Just returned from Cal ifornia, where he had gone to see a horse named Swapps (no relative) run. It rained the whole time they were there. This made for messy horse racing, but Donald said he didnt care. He had his boy, who is 48 years old, with him and it was worth it Just for him to see it rain. (Clark surely holds his age well, doesnt he?) Getting back to the report, it says that the expected runoff at Hatch on the Sevier River will be about half bf normal, and The water utlook is also very poor on the Virgin, Paria and Escalante rivers . . ." There is very little we can' do about the moisture we can get from the clouds, but as I have said before, we can make better use of the water we do get by leveling land, lining ditches, and installing adequate control structures. Weve come upon spring again, a time for cleaning the attic, digging around those flower bulbs, and painting the window screens. And something else we ought to pay attention to. Along with all this refurbishing, dont overlook the old physiological machine, that body of yours. Its time to check up on your health, were reminded by the American Society, which this year is using a catchy slogan, "Fight Cancer with a Check-uand a Check. What this means, of course, is quite obvious. The ACS needs , in doing two things getting enough money your together to keep scientists working on a way to beat cancer permanently and getting such folks as you and me to go and have a physical examination. Why a physical checkup? Because its the best way to find out whether anything including cancer is wrong fvt'ith you. Cancer can creep up on you quite like, and you dont know youve got it until its got you. So take a day off from beating those ruggs and see tbe doc. Tell him you want a thorough examination to make sure you dont have cancer. And about that check, the Cancer Society says it isnt insisting on that If you dont trust banks, its all right with the Society. Make out a money order and send it along. Or just good old plain coin of the realm will do. Everybody ought to get into the act, because cancer is everybody business and we can't depend on just the check writers to do something about it. All of us have got to help. Send your contributions to CANCER, care of your local post office, no holds barred any kind of dough a check if youve got one, but anyway dont forget the checkup or you might be checking BOURBON WHISKY 86 PROOF .
