Show former resident mes 0 in cali fornia was first local telephone telegraph operator poet word was received at the home of mrs airs M G C nelson of the death of her sister mrs marie miller johnson in venice california last friday morning mrs airs johnson will be remembered by the older residents of richfield and sevier county having lived here during her girlhood giri girlhood hood and at various times since she was born bom in mt ML pleasant in october 1863 and came to richfield in in 1865 at the age of eleven she became Rich fields telegraph operator receiving the news over the wa wire of the custer massacre she was also Rich fields first telephone operator she read broadly during her life and accumulated a library of several hundred volumes from young womanhood she wrote under the name ruby lamont lament contributing to various utah publications several years ago she published in book form a few of her many poems under the title the souls language two of her poems are in the L D S hymn book under the signature af AT johnson she lived a very active life taking part politically when utah was admitted to statehood at which time she was a vigorous champion of womans comans suffrage at subsequent times she interested herself in state affairs in 1900 she moved to salt lake city and in 1915 made her home in california she leaves five children W B johnson leon johnson emron johnson and mrs uarda zoeller all of venice california and mrs leona taylor of new york city nine grandchildren two brothers H P miller of venice utah and J clarence miller of salt lake city five sisters mrs airs martha crosby of ogden mrs 11 C nelson mrs airs caroline peterson mrs laura laura smith and miss aliss eudora miller of richfield two children preceded her in death funeral services and burial were in california |
