The student obviously benefits from more personal attention. The teacher is less taxed, time and energy wise, but he also attains within the community in that citizens are made aware of the intrinsic problems with which each instructor has to cope. Citizens get a feeling for the direction and scope of its educational system. Free art and creative writing experiences in the school have resulted from local artists, writers, and everyday citizens offering their time to add a new are the sole product of our civic concern. Amanda Peterson is a notable exception. As a citizen who is involved and who has definite ideas as to remedial measures, Mrs. Peterson prefers constructive ac- more-credibilit- tion to oral belittlement. In other words, ski competition should not be the only avenue of recognized accomplishment open to our children. Volunteers were placed in the high school for the first time this past year and Amanda is hopeful for the institution of a pilot vocational program next year. The vocational program would allow students to receive credit for work done in the community. This ambitious venture would require tremendous voluntary' support from the citizens and businessmen of Park City. Students would be exposed to job responsibility and receive Thaynes Canyon Drive since last April. Aside from an occasional stint at Wolfes Ski Shop when help is needed (Jan is the manager), the majority of Amandas time is consumed by parental duties and her role as Volunteer Coordinator for Marsac Elementary School. The Volunteer Program, which was conceived two years ago and which has the complete support of the Marsac staff, is patterned after similar programs active throughout the state, especially in Salt Lake City. As Volunteer Coordinator, Mrs. Peterson formulates program policy and aids in the placement of persons who wish to assist teachers at Marsac Elementary. The duties assumed by the volunteers are predicated on the desires of the particular participant andor teacher and on the qualifications of the volunteers. Some are certified work exthat employers, so ferperience vently require. Mrs. Peterson emphasized that the Volunteer Program can use as many people as care to offer their services, especially males. As an active participant in Citizens for Productive Government, Amanda stated that the group was successful in getting citizens to vote in greater numbers this past fall and to vote for candidates who were most qualified. She feels this same interest should be concentrated on the School Board elections wjiich will take place this fall. The Board makes many important decisions and she feels the appropriate amount of concern should be directed toward its selection. Mrs. Peterson urges the implementation of a more creative curriculum which treats the high school student as a young adult.
