FIRE PREVENTION Once again, during the. week of October-8 to 14, Orem City joins -with the entire nation. in observing Fire Prevention Pre-vention Week. It is a time- of more than passing signifi-. signifi-. cance to all of us, wherever we live and whether or not we think we have a direct interest in the problem of fire and its prevention. Fire injures people. It may injure them directly one's self or one's possessions. It injures almost all of us in the cost of fire losses spread over the entire population populat-ion by insurance. . Last year fire cost the American people in property losses $667,000,000. That's about $20 for the average family. The fire loss in Utah has been estimated at $3,153,000. Nationwide, the fire loss this year is greater than it was in I949 and may easily set an all-time record. Fire prevention is a public problem, not just something some-thing for firemen and fire insurance agents to worry a-bout; a-bout; and, only through public cooperation can ;we achieve any substantial reduction in the toll of suffering and damage from fire. It is the purpose of Fire Prevention Preven-tion Week to enlist that public cooperation; and all over this nation and this state, efforts are being made:to interest in-terest people in the problem. . In Orem, the promotional work is being undertaken by the men who know the menace of fire best the volunteer vol-unteer fire fighters. In Utah the Utah State Firemen's Association is working to further the fire prevention educational campaign along with the fire prevention division div-ision of the Utah Safety Council. Well over a thousand men who serve in the state's four paid and 64 volunteer fire departments are asking their friends and neighbors to help them prevent fires and minimize the loss and suffering which fire means. They are asking for that help in Orem. It is the purpose pur-pose of this editorial to carry that plea directly to you and to ask that you give that help in the form of extra care not only during Fire Prevention Week but throughout through-out the year. . , Peach Tree Root Borer Should be . Controlled Now Peach orchards suffer more damage from the attacks of root borer than from any other insect. in-sect. This statement is one we have decided is right since we made a tree by tree survey of Utah County peach orchards to spot Western X diseased trees. While there is no relationship between the disease and the root b' rers, we could not h'.-lp seeing tlu borer damage. At this time of year the borers bor-ers are only a few weeks old and are working in the outer bark at about soil level. They are quite easily killed by either ethylene dichloride emulsion or P. D. benzene applied now. Any of your chemical dealers can supply the 'chemicals. Be sure you stop the damage the ro6t borer can. do in your orchard. COAL . Mangum Coal Co. Clean, Hot Coal.
