through a i long and eventful life alfred kandall randall the subject of this sketch is worthy of more than passing mention lie ile was born june 13 1811 in the old town of bridgewater N Y and consequently had he lived till next juno june would have elored 80 full years what a history of events he must be have e gassei ed through I 1 the days of bis his chi childhood child hooi and the days of liia his death crasp grasp the two ends of a century and when the extremities are drawn together til till they touch what miracles of mind and hand do they enclose en cloeo I 1 mr kandall randall was one of nine children born to jason kandall randall and BU martha his wife when he was 8 9 years old he be with bis his fathers family moved to kirkland ohio and when a little older be he helped to cut off the forests and to build the temple at al that place in 1830 the family moved to mun son ohio and a year later to win winter ter quarters the year following he be was married to emeretta davis and boon soon after moved to chardon chardo n same ame state mr kandall randall was a c carpenter bv by trade and in 1839 after closing out oa his business in chardon Cb ardon ho lie moved to quincy ill then hardly large enough to bo called a vil village laze in 1840 he was baptized into the church of jesua jesus chaiet of latter day saints by oraon orson hyde and in the following fol lowine year was ordained deacon by jacob crouso and went to nauvoo whore where for a long lime time reworked he worked on the temple here he be was ordained elder by president Wil williams Hame he ile was present at t the trial of joseph joeeph smith at monmouth and accompanied him and lit his brother hyrum to the carthage jail in 1845 he was ordained into tho the fifteenth quorum of seventies by bober 0 kimball airl and boon soon after three years ho he joined the lattard lat tars company of that with plodding oz ox teams crossed the plains and came down into the valley of the great salt lake where ho he arrived in 1848 thia this was a memorable journey for few indeed savo save the idi lodean had ever let foot loot oa on that terra whatever may be said to have been tho the causes that lead to vast bands of deer and antelope and sometimes Bonu timea hordes of prowling wolves kept them company the following year mr randall left the little hamlet of silt salt lake city and went into Kim kimballs balls canyon where he boila the first sawmill that tha t constructed in utah from thence ho he went to bingham banyon canyon and built another and ibo the following year erected a woolen factory on the jear ordan jordan thirteen miles from sa salt it lake city this was known as cants gants factory alter after remaining there borne some three or foar four years he returned to salt lake city and ascia assisted ted in tho the construction of many buil buildings dinga that are still g about 1857 8 he went to CA camp CAP P floyd where with the aid ald of his aon soil frank and some others be its built more than one hundred bouses which were afterwards ter wards occupied by gen johnston Joh naton and his big army soon after this ho he came cam e to weber county and settled first south of the weber river on what has since been known know I 1 as a tho the mcfarland place where he lie hii built a lit the first fence and planted tho the first pota toes aea in that vicinity after a while he ie moved to north ogden where be he continued to live till the day of bis big death at the age of nearly 80 years mr kandall randall built and lor for nany many years 0 operated grated the woolen factory tory that la Is at still fi 11 stand standing inz just b below e low tho ha mouth of ogden olden canyon thrice he crossed the pacific oc ocean ean to hawaiian islands where bo be went to labor as a missionary among the natives four time he traversed tho the plains with ox teams bringing on his first prairie schooner voyage a stock of general merchandise for and kell bell who operated the first store in Balt Salt Liko Like city this old building was torn down gome some ten years ago mr kandall was a quiet man with a gool deal of native energy that w was as a always at hand when needed sometimes among bis his intimates ho he allowed hla his nature to thaw out and then the fund of anecdote and information with which bla his mind was stored was really marvelous marve loua he lie had a rare faculty of remembering all he ever beard or saw through the vicissitude of a long and eventful lile life and ho he told them with rare facility M ula elpe experience ria at nauvoo
