The violence erupted in the ancient city of Isfahan, 300 miles south of Tehran, when a protest march turned into a riot. Official sources said thousands of demonstrators damaged banks and public buildings and toppled statues of the shah. The sources said the troops first used tear gas and then rifle fire to quell the riot. In Tehran, demonstrators who took control of the city center, chanting "Down witli the shah! " were told by opposition leaders, "We. will continue con-tinue until victory is won!" In an effort to avoid bloodshed in the downtown area, Iran's military-led military-led government withdrew its troops and tanks which had been positioned to enforce a curfew. Ellisville, Mississippi A fire accompanied by heavy smoke swept through a mental institution Saturday, killing 15 women, most of them bedridden, and injuring 16 other people. Electricity in the two-story building went out at about the same time the fire was discovered at 2 a.m., forcing rescuers to use flashlights in their search for patients.
