Show ITHEp m Wednesday, November 8, 1978 Page 13 Quilts At KAC U UCCn V MLLL T by Ouicksilver . . i 1 G C A Interiors When Woody Allen announced he was interested in-terested in producing a totally serious film, both critics and fans greeted the decision with apprehension. ap-prehension. Other comedians, most notably Charlie Chaplin, had tried to move from comedy to serious film with mediocre results. And judging from Allen's previous work, America's finest contemporary comedian would follow the path of the other humorists-turned-dramatists. i But Interiors is not mediocre, bittersweet or pretentious. It is a beautifully thought out and produced film that establishes Woody Allen as one of the most important artists working in film today. Allen has made a clean break with his past; so clean that if Diane Keaton did not appear ap-pear in the film, there would be nothing to connect con-nect it to any of his past efforts. Interiors chronicles the interrelationship of a family that is in the midst of a divorce. The children (three daughters) have all grown, with one (Diane Keaton) becoming a successful poetess, while the other daughters are respectively respec-tively involved in acting for T.V. films and in tjying to find herself. Their father has decided to leave their mother because she is too cold and demanding. The mother cannot accept his departure, and falls apart. Woody Allen weaves a complex web of interrelationships in-terrelationships between the family. The bonds, fissures, hopes, aspirations, dependencies, Weaknesses and motivations of each character is explored in depth. The poetess, who can no longer write, and her husband, whose career is qvershadowed by hers; the daughter, who wants to create something but doesn't know what; the actress, who is cast in "jiggle" films but is passed over for more important parts; the father (husband) who, after raising a family, wants to enjoy himself; and the mother, who can't accept his second childhood and consequent departure. Every person is scrutinized and analyzed but they also are treated with compassion rarely found in the cinema. ; t Interiors is beautifully shot and masterfully djiretediAllen subtlely builds tension in the film, and while "developing the characters he makes no judgments about them. He fills every minute of the film without resorting to melodrama. Inevitably, Interiors will be compared to a Bergman film. Many people feel that Allen has qopied Bergman's style almost completely, including in-cluding using lights very similar to that of Sven ptyquist. Allen was, of course, influenced by pergman, but Interiors stands on its own merit, and the people who degrade it as a copy would pot be so critical if the actors were speaking Swedish. . L The apprehension is dispelled. Woody Allen is just as jija'portant a dramatist as he is a Ifcfflftffim' That means he's one of the best.
