Dr. Groom and assistant Dan Cutler go to the mine weekly to retrieve the information collected by the computer on reel-to-reel tapes. "We have been collecting the data since January and we need to continue taking it for a few years,"' Dr. Groom noted. "We need at least two years to establish a base line." The incidence of particles striking the detector is precisely recorded using Greenwich Mean Time, which is accurate to within .005 of a second. The mine's computer clock is synchronized syn-chronized with a Bureau of Standards signal being received from Boulder, Colorado. Dr. Groom said that last New Year's Eve one leap second was added because the Earth was behind schedule. He commented that it is essential to retrieve the tapes every week. "Last week we picked up one tape with a five-day gap, Nixon style," he chuckled. The physicist noted that each of the 300 counters has two discriminators, and that every fifteen minutes the computer calibrates all 600 discriminators discrimi-nators to see that everything is in working order. A panel of tiny red bulbs continually lights up, indicating a detected particle. Dr. Groom isolated separate hits to show the line of travel through the detector, pointing out significant particles. He commented that the computer takes ten millionths of a second to analyze routine events, remembering a summary of them for a half hour before recording. The computer spends most of the time twiddling its thumbs," Dr. Groom said. "Since there are only five particles per second, it has plenty of time to brush its teeth." The physicist said the goal is to record 100 million counts per year, or 400,000 per day. That rate drops if a high pressure system comes through Groves Appears And Is Charged With Theft Park City resident Bill Groves appeared before Judge James Kilby Friday, October 20, and was charged with three counts of theft by deception. He is accused of exercising control over the property of Ann Clark and two separate incidences involving in-volving Johnston Development. Develop-ment. Groves was released on $2,500 bail and will appear at a preliminary hearing scheduled for November 21. If sufficient evidence is presented at the hearing, Groves will be held over for trial. In other police action: A 1974 Firebird driven by Charles Connelly struck a standpipe at the top of Main Street on the 25th, causing $300 damage to the oil pan and exhaust system of the car. The pipe, protruding from the middle of the street at the intersection of King Road, was apparently unmarked. un-marked. Thirty-seven sheets of plywood were stolen fifom Park Meadows no. 5 lot, Enoch Smith reported on the 27th. The plywood, valued at $332, apparently was stolen between 4:30 p.m. on the 26th and 8 a.m. the 27th. He added that weather reports are obtained through Salt Lake's international airport, where high altitude balloons detect the weather patterns. A similar experiment is taking place at the University of Tazmania in Hobart. That laboratory is located under a hydroelectric plant. Although some of the results are the same, the scientists are looking for possible hemispheric differences that may effect the pattern of the particles. The Tazmania project is located as far south of the equator as Salt Lake City is north. Dr. Groom, who transplanted from Cornell in 1969, first entered the science field when he built a telescope in high school. And now his career is a "mixture of particle physics and astral physics, with one foot in astronomy." Contrary to the absent-minded, bespeckled and rumpled image scientists scien-tists seem to have, the 43-year-old Dr. Groom is lean and athletic. He is an avid hiker with a private pilot's license who spends free time gardening garden-ing with his wife and three children. He also has a glider rating and has spent time soaring over the Heber Valley. He and his associates at the University use their lunch time to go jogging. "We often laugh that jogging makes sense for us because we are professionally trained to beat our heads against a wall," he laughed. Back in the blackness of the tunnel, Dr. Groom talked excitedly above the clanging of the car. "We really don't know what we'll find," he said casually. "But science has learned to divorce itself from what the good of an experiment might be in the long run. What Muons are important for right now, we don't know. We are just trying to understand under-stand cosmic rays and the dynamics of the galaxy." culars, radio tape cassette recorder and a camera were stolen from no. 170 Payday condominiums on the 29th. The merchandise, belonging to Barney Rosenblatt of Salt Lake City, was valued at $950. Forced entry was made through a locked door leading lead-ing to a deck. The Edelweiss House on Empire Avenue was burglarized burglar-ized and vandalized Sunday. A Zenith color television worth $500 was stolen and a ping pong table valued at $100, was destroyed. The vandals also used crayon to mark on a video trap shoot game. in Due to a clerical error the person who is elected to the Fire Commission Com-mission will have to be written in. f 1 " u-g-g 3Pr J sk slot mm n 00 DD 1 .
