Show Page 8 Wednesday, November 10, 1976 MUSIC NOTES By Jay Meehan KMPR Radio Mm 155 7 '- Thi is the second and concluding segment of an How Ions did you stay there? interview with Tiny Moore and Eldon Shamblin, two Eldon: I stayed there about five years and then I ex-members of the great Bob Wills "Western Swing" band the "Texas Playboys.lt was conducted in Salt Lake City on the afternoon of .October 30 prior to a scheduled Merle Haggard concert that evening. Mrrle had missed the show the night before in Denver and at the time of the interview, no one in the entire tour organizatin knew of his whereabouts or wellbeing. Although Tiny Moore refused to discuss the situation "for the record," when we left off last wehtback to Tulsa. My children live there, and I'm a , paino technician and do electronic organ service work. " ' '7; r Tiny, when did you leave Bob Will's band? Tiny; In 1955. I moved to Sacramento. You mentioned thatdancehall, Wills Point. I asked him if I could have the job if it ever became available started managing Wills Point in 1955. After about six months I asked Bob to send out Billy Jack, ms 4 week he did bring up a comparative analysis of the younger brother, in order to form our own bands He differences in the problems encountered when Bob Wills missed a dance as opposed to when the feature vocalist in "The Modern set-up" missed a concert. It seems that it would be much easier , with you current band to get away with that ( a missing vocalist), but then again your singer, merle Haggard, is about the biggest there is. This current edition of the "Strangers" is quite possibly the finest road band traveling today. . Tiny: That's nice of you to say, but what are you going to play? All the arrangements revolve around the vocalist, you see. ! . In the Wills Band were Tommy Duncan or any of the other vocalists ever-any more than just another member of the band, another instrument? Tiny: No, they were always just part of the orchestra: As a matter of tact, a lot of the things came out, and, on a local basis, we were fairly successful. Later on Bob came out and decided to lease the place out. . j What did you do then? ' Tiny: Idid some TV work. I had a kid's show on TV for about five or six years. Then I opened i studio and started to teach music. .....' ; ' Were you doing that when Hag talked you to coming back out on the road? ....... Tiny: Well, it must have been back in 1970, when Hag was going to record the Bob Wills Tribute Album, that "Tribute to the Best Damn Fiddle Player in the World." I got a call from Norman Hamlett, Steel Guitarist and band manager (for the "Strangers"). I hadn't played in a long time but some of us got together: Myself, Elodn, Jody Lee, Johnny Gimble, and Joe Holly. It was us,, and of course, Merle's band. Then I didn't hear from Merle until after the album was released. He gave me a Tommy would want to be in on, do some singing. And call from Bakersfield. He was just building his house that's one of the reasons they wrote all the words to things like "Stay All Night, Stay a Little Longer". They're basically fiddle tunes. They wrote the words so Tommy could get in on some of the action, or Otherwise it would be just an instrumental. Is that how the words to "San Antonio Rose" came about? ' Tiny: I really don't know the reason for that. Eldon: Well, Bob put out an instrumental first, of course, and it was so big and he got the idea he needed some words for it. then, and he had a big birthday party for Bob and a lot of us showed up. We played all day and they recorded it but nothing came out good enough to release. A couple of weeks after that they called and asked me to play a job with them in Lake Tahoe, and for a couple of years thats all I did with them. Then about three years ago I started to do it full time. Why would someone who had traveled as much as you, want to leave the relaxed atomsphere of being his own boss in Sacramento, to return to the road? Tiny: Wei, I don't know. If I were to be real honest, I guess you like the roar of the crowd, the recognition. Plus the fact that Hag's band plays about half the time, so I can still keep my home thing organized. With me, the main things I enjoy about it are, number one , I don't have to do it. I can go back home anytime I want to, and number two, it's a complete Your horoscope can bring wealth, love, success and happyness but Star Gaper offers, only athlete's foot, hemorrhoids, cold sores and general discomfort. Tiny: Ok. I was in Houston right before I went into' the army, and of course, the panic button got turned on about there being a shortage of all metal. I went down to the music store and bought, I think it was fifty dollars worth of mandolin strings. And back then, gosh, that was a terrible amount of strings, about all I could find you know. I got afraid that they'd wear out so I cut it down to single strings, and after a while I liked the effept. Of course the mandolin I'm playing now is a five-string. I added a low string on the bottom. It's E,A,D,G,and C on the bottom. So it covers the same range as the viola and the violin. Eldon, are you still playing a guitar you used in the "Texas Playboys", or have you gotten a new one since you came back out on the road with Hag? Eldon: I have a Fender Telecaster. Mr. Fender gave it to me in 1954. It was a demonstrator, before they put the stra toe aster into production, and I sail use the same guitar. ' When did you leave Bob Wills, Eldon? Eldon: 1956. 1 went back to Oklahoma. I did various things for a while, then I wound up down in Big Springs, Texas, as part of the Hoyle Nix Band. He's been down in the Big Springs, Texas area for about 30 years. He was steictly a big Wills fan and his band was primarily a western swing band. He's soil playing, by the way. much easier. What got you back out on the road, Eldon? Eldon: Well, about the same story as Tiny's. About two and a half years ago, every time Merle was down in' the Oklahoma area he would call me and say "Why don't you make this trip with us?" So I'd go, and as the time would go on, I'd start to do it more and more , and I guess it's been about year and a half since I've been with the band regular. It's really a, pleasure to work with a bunch of good musicians. Guys like Roy Nichols, Norm Hamlett, and Biff and the res tV And for guys like us who have played all our. lives , it's a big ego thing, It really gives you a shot in the arm.
