' Mayor Leon Uriarte has announced that neither man will be reappointed for the coming year.. Uriarte said he has been aware of a problem between Henley and Lence for the last month and a half and that ' ''things have just gotten worse." The mayor had postponed the reappointed of the two landing a resolution of their differences but when no reconciliation :. was for. thcoming, he made his move. The dispute apparently was fueled by Henley's contention that Lence was too lenient , when prosecuting, cases which came before him. . Adding to the enmity, Henley, in , the past, has directed his officers to take certain defendants to Judge James Kilby's court rather than have them tried . by Lence. The' police chief has also stated that Lence has sent cases to higher courts which should have been tried in Park City, This, be claimed, has caused the city to lose approximately $4,000 in collectable fines. Judge Lence, on the other hand, has declared that Henley lacks the legal knowledge to make such pronouncements. He said the Park City police force has improperly filed cases in his court which he has had to dismiss due to lack of jurisdiction. Lence has also contended that Henley has illegally taken violators of Park City ordinances .outside of Park. City courts, v :-., In an attempt to remedy their, severely strained relationship, the two officials met with the city council on Dec. 29 to air their US Poslage Paid - 3I) Park City, Utah 84060 Number Seventeen grievances. At the conclusion of that session both . men expressed a belief that their differences could be resolved. Mayor Uriarte again conferred with the police chief last Friday and at that time decided . that ; the situation had deteriorated. He notified Henley that same day of his decision but could not reach the judge until Sunday. ' ;,. f, "One was at fault just as .much as the other," Uriarte said. "Both had problems in their own departments and the only fair way was to let them both go. I was reluctant to take this action but it "teemed like an impossible situation." Uriarte revealed that he has asked Henley to serve as acting police chief until a replacemtnt can be found and to remain on the police force after that time. "I asked Larry to stay on the force. He has been a good policeman for Park City," the mayor said. ' It has been reported that Henley will soon accept : a position with the Summit4 County Sheriff's office. ; In that' event, Officer Dennis Letham will act as Park City Police Chief until a permanent per-manent replacement is fpund. The new chief will ap parently be selected from outside Park City as the position is being advertised in the Salt Lake City newspapers. "I have no idea who the replacement ' will be," Uriarte said. "I had hoped the , problem would be resolved. We will try to find a qualified person as soon as possible." ; Judge Lence has been given until the end of the month to organize his papers and leave office. r A letter has been sent to the State Attorney General inquiring as to the legality of having Justice of the Peace Kilby fiU the vacancy.
