Show Rhoades and Lindsay Adopt Resolution t in Opposition Price Road Two members of oC the Duchesne tnt o board o of commissioners this week reek adopted a most startling resolution reso- reso lution with reference to the expenditure expenditure iture of ot money on state roads Those These two men Thomas Rhoads and George LIndsey reside in territory tributary tributary tribu tary to the tho City ity of Duchesne They adopted this resolution 1 iii 1 spite of ot ofA A x protest by the chairman William Gentry who resides It in m a territory In Including in- in eluding the most thickly populated I portion of the county The resolution resolution tion is as follows That whereas the state roa road commission com com- mission mission and the state boar hoard board 1 of ot corI corrections cor- cor I have announced their Intentions Intentions of ot improving a state road road from I Iome some ome l point on the railroad to the Uintah basin and Whereas the Uintah basin Is separated separated separated sep sep- from the railroad by by- bya by a a high range range of mountains making winter whiter travel on all routes more or less difficult dif dU and Whereas it has been shown by the records of ot the past eight years that the route from Duchesne west to the railroad has proved to be the most satisfactory route Into and out of ot the basin baalu and Whereas the incoming and outgoing out- out going soing freight for Uintah county is by byar byway byway way ar of Watson the terminus of the Uintah railway only the incoming and aud outgoing freight for Duchesne county will be served by the proposed proposed proposed pro pro- posed road and Whereas there is no community in Duchesne county which cannot reach roach the railroad at at least eight miles nearer by the Duchesne to Helper I route than by the My Myton ton to Price I route and I Whereas each of our our people people peo peo- peo-I peo pIe living west from the town of Dayton Myton in orders order to travel th the Dayton Myton Iton I to Price road would be forced to travel two miles mUes extra distance distance- fo for 1 each mile he lives west of My Myton ton and I Duchesne county being fifty I miles wide the My Dayton Myton ton to Price road would add an a average I mileage of ot fifty plus eight miles or i I fifty eight additional miles mUes for the territorY territorY- to be he served and Whereas it is possible to secure substantial help help from the forest department department department de de- for the improvement of road conditions from Duchesne to Helper Heher which could not be secured for the Myton lyton to Price route and I Whereas a very large federal appropriation appropriation appropriation ap ap- i can be secured for the Duchesne Du chesne to Helper route the same being being belag be be- ing lag a post host road which c could uld not be secured for any route not a post road and aad Whereas wood and good water are aro plentiful along the Duchesne to Helper Helper Hel Hel- per route In the place of an absolute desert condition of ot a large part of the My Myton ton to Price road and Whereas six six- six sevenths of the road between Duchesne and Helper has a natural excellent road bed composed of at bituminous and sand clays formed the same being l tactically practically Impervious to water and andrs tars rs equal to macadam and ate al abot t t the he same per cent of the Myton My ton to Price road Is of at the poorest grade of or road material existing In the Mate State of Utah which would necessitate tate an expenditure several times greater to make a pas passable road than would be required to make an excellent thoroughfare of the Duchesne Duchesne Duchesne Du Du- Du- Du chesne to Helper road Therefore be it resolved by the board of at county commissioners oB Duchesne county that we declare ourselves strongly in favor tavor of the Duchesne Duchesne Duchesne Du Du- chesne to Helper route and that we will give this route all of the financial assistance possible under our condi condi- conditions conditions conditions but that owing to the tho necessity t of ot of first building a a. road that will accommodate accommodate ac ac- all of or the people we do donot donot donot not feel justified in upending any money on the to Myton road until the Duchesne to Helper and Strawberry valley roads are v ed ad The farmers of ci tho UtO Uintah tho-Uintah Uintah basin are urged to raise ralso hg Cops to feed soldiers We have it from all sources that the 7 European allies may lose loe this war to Germany through th the starvation route Thousands of oC extra extra extra ex ex- ex- ex tra acres will be planted here this year if we we are assured of a passable road to U 8 markets The only possible possible possible pos pos- sible passable road the year around is the Myton l to Price road If this road is not built thousands of acres In this basin will grow up in weeds that would otherwise be cultivated What the Uintah basin farmers can can raise and will raise might win the war Many people in this vicinity who have been holding seed potatoes for planting will Wm refuse to do so know know- knowIng knowing Ing that there will be no sale f for r a large tonnage here in the basin The Upalco Flour mill mm has around Mound I bushels of seed wheat of the he best variety which has been offered altered at atco co cost t for planting If it is found that there will be he no way out to market with the wheat this fall tall the Upalco people will grind what they have on hand Th They Y know that there will be beno beno beno no sale saie for a Ii large tonnage In this basin Ne Neither ther the Helper road nor the Strawberry road will ever be anything anything anything any any- thing better than summer roads The lowest possible point for a road over o the Colton summit Is feet The altitude on Daniels pass Strawberry road Is feet The lowest possible point for a road from My Myton l ton to Price Is feet reet If the same amount of at money h had d been expended expended expended ex ex- on the Price road that has been expended on the Helper road said Price road would today be bone dry The pas passenger nger who starts from here to Helper at this time of the year rides in an auto in a wagon in a sleigh and then again in a sleigh in ina ina a wagon and in an auto before he gets to Helper If he does not have to walk and push and swear part of the way he is In luck The only way war ever to make a road from Duchesne Duchesne Duchesne Du Du- chesne to Helper is to construct a concrete tunnel If It the Duchesne Stage Transportation people are lucky they will be running autos to Helper some time al about out the last of ot otI June or the first of Then I when when the the snow begins to fly in the fall the they will remark what a shore short I summer we wo have enjoyed The Price Price-Myton ton road will benefit not only a majority of Duchsne county county county coun coun- ty but a large part of Uintah county The Tho resolution adopted b by the two county con commissioners misstates facts The Helper road has not been most satisfactory A great deal of ot freight for Uintah county comes in over the Price road There are people w west t of ot My Myton ton but they reside still west of the county li line e. e There is li plenty of wood and water along the Helper road Travelers will need both to to keep the cold and thirst away during the tile long journey I A great man many people in Duchesne and Uintah counties who trade in Colorado would prefer to trade iu lu Salt Lake but they ther cant can't get to Salt Lake except a few months in the I year eu unless they go around by way of Colorado They say that while they are in ill Colorado they just as welt oil trade there thero and be done with It Give Ghe them a passable road the year round and Salt Lake will get that I trade Colorado would like mighty well io to o corral oll all the wealth of ot this j 1 great country Colorado might yet et succeed Certainly so BO unless road conditions are aro improved ed Governor Hamberger Bamberger has said that the tho State of Utah is going to build the Price Dayton ton road this sum sum- mer The Free Press does not believe believe believe be- be be be- lieve that all the influence that c can n nhe be he brought to bear hear from Duchesne will cause him to change chango his mind unless he is convinced It will be he best I for a majority of or the people of the j I Uintah basin With members of ot the thO I State road commission he will probably probably probably I I ably make a trip over both the Helper Help Help- er and ami the Price Dayton ton road If the I governor go and members of the Stale Statu- I road 1 commission lon over see that Helper I road from to station they'll I doubtless hurry tho tiro work on the Price Price-Myton toll road I |
