Here it is time to write a column again I wanted to be amusing tonight but I’m not amused I do like the weather But as usual I sort of missed spring My grass which looked so pitiful three weeks ago so I fertilized is now so deep I had to get my nephew with the longest legs to mow it I was afraid if I got anyone shorter a search party would be required to find them I attempted to mow the lawn myself Sunday but got so frustrated I considered shooting the mower I got hooked on the old rotary mowers that ate rocks and everything These new improved versions with all the safety devises required the operator to have five hands just to hold and push and check everything necessary to make them run And as the grass was knee deep and still a little wet from the rain I couldn’t keep the mower going I have read a saying that men get angry at machines and women get angry at people I can get mad at peoI ple but nothing like the heat that can generate with machines or equipment that won’t run right And am fairly mechanical I have tried to analyze my temper with machines and have yet to come to any logical conclusion (Women aren’t supposed to be logical) I know in the winter when the car wouldn’t start it didn’t have a stroke it is a wonder made me so angry like a good debate (I said debate not argument) and it is possible that I can debate away my temper with peothat won’t do ple but machines anything make for a real onesided conversation Maybe I’ll just have to conclude that I have too much male hormone I know all men and women have both male and female hormones so mine must be out of whack But I’m not really satisfied with that conclusion so I am going to keep thinking about it And it is realy funny to think about when my temper subsides It is so ridiculous to get so worked up over an inanimate object Probably that is what makes me so made - that it is inanimate If it worked I wouldn't be mad Another part to that is patience I have been told that I am overly patient with people But I have zero patients with things that don’t work And I have no patience to fiddle with it And a late bulletin on the cat population I have another batch of kittens four this time and they seem to be doing alright Get your order in fast these are wonderful cats three all black and one smokey gray I have changed the inside cat’s name again She is really getting confused First it was Kat then Cleo Kat (because of her face that looks like she over did her eyeliner) Now and I think finally it is Cleokatra I Community Calendar Motor Vehicle Schedule: Fillmore Mon & Thurs 9 a m noon & May 2 pm Fillmore Library 7:30 pm May 3 Blood Pressure Clinic Delta Public Helath (Tues) am & Delta Wed 9 a m noon & pm Renewals any working day at Millard County Offices March 31 Prenatal classes begin at Delta Community Medical Center 7:30 pm April Child Abuse Prevention month April 13 Prenatal course begins at Fillmore Medical Center 7:30 Community 9:30 pm April West Millard Cancer Residential Drive April 24 May 1 National Soil and Water Stewardship week April 29 DeAnn Fowles and David Porter Sutherland Ward wedding reception Cultural Hall 7:30 - More news from Japan by Jane Beckwith foreign correspondent Well have you missed me? I imagine that I’m about one or two weeks bahind in my correspondence That’s bAause school ended here March 20 haven’t had access to my and so favorite word processor The odd thing about the Japanese school system is that even though there were no students at school from March 20 to April 6 had to come every day just to put my honko in the book of records sort of like punching the time clock Then I could go home so it was just a formality Other teachers were here every day too Some had meetings some read the paper some pretended to be busy All showed their devotion to their job their loyalty to the school by showing up I did slip away “on business” to Tokyo for four days Again that “on business” idea saved me a little money because the school paid some of my expenses which add up pretty quickly in Tokyo because it’s supposed to be the most expensive city in the world (Sometimes I think Japanese people like that reputation but that’s another letter) It was Hajime Nakazawa’s graduation from Sophia University and he vited me to come celebrate with him and his friends I accepted not because I was interested in seeing another Japanese graduation you’ll remember the last one I described but because I hadn’t talked with Hajime for a long time Some people in Delta may remember him He was an exchange student at DHS seven years ago He lived in Fool Creek with the Bryce Finlinson family still talks fondly of Bart Wankier from he was graduating Anyway Sophia a prestigious private school When I told the teachers at Akifuchu I was going they High School where all oohed and ahhed in wonder that I knew a person who was able to graduate from that place I guess that means it would be like graduating from or NorStanford or Columbia thwestern in America And if the truth were told it w asn’t that he was graduating from a good school it was that he was able to ENTER the school The rigors of entrance examinations are not exaggerated On the day of the ceremony Hajime met me at my hotel and we went to the English tutor school where he works and I sat in on two of his classes The first had only about 12 high school students who were on vacation Yes on vacation and going to tutor school so that they could some day pass the rigorous entrance tests to a university so that when they graduate from a prestigious school some employer will ooh and ahhh over them The class began at 8:30 in the morning and the students sat quietly and took notes on everything Hajime said Of course they didn’t make comments or ask questions but that’s the way Japanese students are In the next class the students were what are called “ronin” which used to mean a smamarai without a master What it means now is a college student without a college In more simple terms these students failed the college entrance test and they have one year to brush up on their skills and try again next year is school Hajime’s expensive —40000 yen ($3000) to study three subjects for 10 months— so these students all about 18 or 19 years old There were over looked 100 in the room Hajime used a microphone to be heard The warm bodies and warm breath fogged the windows as Hajime wrote rules and examples of English constructions on the Even though he was blackboard teaching an English class the only English I heard was when he read an English using an incorrect English pronunciation such as “testo” for “test” But Japanese students don’t learn the correct pronunciation so if he would have said “test” they wouldn’t have recognized what he was talking about The irony is that the university tests sometimes test for pronunciation A typical problem is to list four English words and a student is supposed to choose which words have the same vowel sound on the stressed syllable It’s incredible Every time I try one of the entrance tests that’s the part I fail This is a simpler version of the same question Which vowel sound is different in these words “busy” “shut” “cup” “supper” or “study”? Did you pass the test? I have a hard time believing that a university would test that way because it just proves how well a student memorizes not speaks English How did I get on this subject? I ' Jane Beckwith Honmachi 304 Hiroshima 735 JAPAN Ok started talking about graduation back on track We left for graduation met Hajime’s parents and entered the univeras at basketball gymnasium any There were no sity in America bleachers just a floor several basketcatwalk ball nets and about a up above The floor was covered with a green tarp Toward the far end by the stage was could have a huge flower arrangement across The graduates sat been in chairs reserved for them but didn’t march in Some of the women were in full kimono regalia beautiful silks and unusual obi (the belt to tie the kimono) Others were dressed in Sunday best The men wore western suits and ties Many had marked suntans because it’s a custom for a graduate to take an extended vacation before April when he begins his lifetime job and may end up working from 7 to 7 six days a week Remember how the teachers at this school regard their vacations? Sort of a lifetime April Fool’s joke A small ensemble played “Pomp and Circumstance” and the faculty members walked in A chorus dressed in robes sang a song in Latin because Sophia is a Catholic school Then as recall there was the introduction of the official guests a speech rather long and finally the presentation of the doctorate degrees then the graduate degrees What pleased me the most was For one that the audience clapped they even cheered and department whistled Simply unheard of behavior in this high school international Each a representative the relations honor student go to the podium to accept the diplomas for all the students in that college After that everyone sang the school song the band played another song and the faculty filed out first It was over But it was a happy change from the solemn graduation here where no one clapped no one was happy no one cried The color and delight of entering a new world which I always feel is part of graduation was not excluded at Sophia I wonder what Japanese people would think of a school where caps are tossed in the air amid an emotional outpour from graduates and friends alike Even though I’ve been here seven months culture shock still shakes me every so often The County Agent Things that go “bump” in the night by Larry Campbell Millard County USU Extension Agent It’s one in the morning and you just little a drink She’s fast gave Mary asleep again but unfortunately you’re not Fred rolls over and begins his gaspJust then ing locomotive impression you hear a strange clink in the kitchen You can’t even resurrect Fred let alone ask his protection Maybe it’s just the house settling or a horse stomping its hoof in the corral outside Perhaps a mouse No real threat right? Once again you begin to relax until a familiar buzzing fills your ears That’s it Even if you don’t get bitten the night’s shot Sound familiar? If have all the creepy crawlies under control in our home it’s easier to tell myself “It’s just the house” and go back to sleep divide this assortment of unwanted guests into three groups Those that squeek those that squish and those that hurt if they get squished Here’s how to control them Those that squeek (mice and rats) need a six step approach proof the outside of the house the kitchen and storage areas Three-u- se tra clean a steel or mechanical trap to catch them se a poison bait in places kids can not is a new poison bait reach that destroys vitamin D to kill mice but ? li'6 Jkii will not affect people or pets strange looking glue trays work great for those hard to catch smart mice Now those that squish (cockroaches) are best controlled by boric acid powder You can get it at the store or pharmacy and it’s the best thing I’ve found It takes weeks to work but then they are gone for good Simply sprinkle a line of powder on the back of shelves or along baseboards where little children can’t reach and that’s it No more roaches Those that hurt when they squish (wasps spiders ants mosquitoes) can all be controlled by pyrethrins or baygon aerosal sprays Many of these pests also need to be controlled outside before they come into the house There and you can also use malathion diazinon sprays Now that all the pests are gone you can sleep easier knowing the odd sounds are either the kids or a real burglar Sports Med Can you stomach your exercise? Hundreds of letters to our office quire “What are the keys to fitness?” Many correct answers can be given but perhaps the least known and discussed is proper abdominal muscular conditioning Good abdominal muscle tone has been reported to increase the athlete’s vertical jump agility and coordination Older athletes report better exercise tolerance after undergoing abdominal In exercise programs addition to the top and bottom “coordinating" halves of the body the abdominal muscles help to alleviate and avoid low back injuries in sports Once the injury has occurred an abdominal muscular strengthening program helps to supplement the low back muscles (erector spinal muscles) in holding the upper body upright In the instance the abdominal muscles are weak the stronger muscles in the low back cause the pelvis to tilt forward resulting in mild low back pain for the athlete In a recent article by Professor Dennis Humphrey in the February issue of The Physician and Sportsmedicine he recommends the trunk curl exercise to increase the strength and stamina of the abdominal muscles First lie down on your back with your hips and knees bent and your feet on the floor Next raise your arms toward your knees as you raise your head and chest towards the thighs This is very similar to a however the upper body should not come completely upright to a sitting position Professor Humphrey reports that initially some athletes may be unable to curl without placing the hands behind the thighs and pulling the chest shoulders and head upwards He recommends three sets of repetitions with the arms at the side then three sets of repetitions with each hand on the opIncreased difficulty-caposite shoulder be added by placing a weight on the upper chest or by working on a tilt board with the feet and legs elevated Most agree that straight leg raises and straight leg curls can increase low back symptoms and pain In fact these exercises may slightly increase the risk of further back injury Early attention to abdominal muscular strengthening may be of primary importance to the athlete’s fitness and further avoidance of injuries Should you have a question for SPORTS MEDLINE write to Dr Stephen L Henry 1361 Tyler Park Drive Louisville KY 40204 Local hospitals to celebrate National Hospital Week m Orta m M4 U4 Amendments-($176- million reduction) These tax initiatives are a grave threat to Utah’s future Everyone is in favor of lower taxes but these itiatives go too far!
