Hare families Kevin Ashby Kevin Ashby to report mission Birthday celebrated Kevin Ashby has recently returned from serving in the Ecuador Guayaquil Mission Elder Ashby will report his mission in Sutherland 2nd Ward on April 24 at 12:30 pm Kevin is the son of Ken and DeAnn Ashby Clarence Nielson was born April 27 1889 in Oak City Utah to Niels Peter Nielson and Florence Virginia Dutson He had three brothers and four sisters His father died when he was 9 years old He helped his mother provide for the family of 8 by raising fruit and and piddling them in vegetables Deseret and Oasis He attended the Oak City School where he graduated from the 8th grade which was considered a good education at that time He carried the mail when he was 17 years old on horseback between Oak The mail was City and Leamington tied to the saddle and arrived safe and on time He married Dainy Sheriff on Jan 1911 18 They celebrated their 76th wedding anniversary Jan 11 1987 Dainy died Nov 24 1987 at age 96 They lived all their married life in Oak City Utah except four years when he carried the mail between Delta and Kanosh Utah They moved to Delta for four years Besides his farming operations which consisted also of cattle raising he did custom work at harvest time with a coowned threshing machine While the children were small he worked on the construction of the Haighland Canal between the Sinks and McCornick He Joyed cattle To ride the range was the joy of his life He ran his cattle in Oak Creek Canyon His hobby was building fences He fenced several hundred acres and was still building and repairing fences at age 90 years He loved to dance He enjoyed dancing with his daughters and granddaughters He has never missed a dance in 74 years if he could find one He became ill in Oct of 1987 His wife died on Nov 24 1987 He lived at home until March when he had surgery and was moved to the West He has been Millard Care Center treated royally at the Center and loves to sing along with the group and to sing his favorite songs He heard the good old time music and got to stepping lively with his walker and will dance with members of the staff if available He thinks the people at the Center arc “tops” and he enjoyed the birthday board on display for his 99th birthday He has been invited to the South Elementary 4th grade for an interview of Millard County and Utah pioneer He plans to sing “Strawberry Roan” all 13 verses and if they ask him he will be doing a few quick steps with his walker or maybe one of the teachers 99th birthday Grandpa Happy Clarence Clarence has 9 children 45 grandchildren 115 great grandchildren and 12 great great grandchildren A birthday party will be held at the Care Center Wed April 27 where a video tape will be played of his singing and dancing His they gear up for this year’s work Noting that April is being celebrated for the 50th year as Children and Youth Month the local post is joining hands with posts across the nation in and youth in children participating events Two programs of note which the local post is sponsoring again this year under the direction of is Boys State Jim DeVYyze and American Legion Baseball under the direction of John In addition the post will be Plummer assisting the American Legion Auxiliary with financing its Girls State program Boys State and Girls State is a civic workshop designed to make those attending more informed responsible citizens by becoming more aware of the responsibilities of elected by officials The baseball program grooms youth is such qualities as fair play and the will to succeed Although the post was unable to correlate the Legion National High School Oratorical Contest with Delta High this year and therefore did not sponsor a local contest it is the hope of the new officers that this will not be true of next year These contests develop publicspeaking skills and a keener appreciation of the US Constitution as young students compete for scholarship prizes at the
