Show 2 - Millard Page Thurs L'SPS County Commonte I have been a very angry person lately as I don't need to mention to anyone who has come within 50 feet of me So last night I had big plans to write a column which could only be printed on fire retardant paper But I got a better offer so you are spared the bloody details of just how angry I am It is difficult to decide which has enraged me the most the IRS Postal Dept State Property Tax Auditors or the public still being locked out of the Gunnison Bend reservoir recreation area You noticed a common thread here didn’t you? Government and bureaucrats Need I explain about the IRS? Name someone who likes them or has had a pleasant experience Postal department - first let me say I don’t have a complaint at all with any locals My complaint is with the mental midgets who interpret and administer their policies I have been in a “you owe” “No I don’t” situation with them for quite sometime now It all started with an audit where the auditor disallowed my presort rate As have been presorting to some degree forever and never received a rate let alone a “thanks for making our job easier” I was pretty thrilled when Tom came alone and mostly on his own time all our went through personally subscribers He made sure we were doing just what we should for presort and also helped immeasureably get the papers to subscribers more timely We are also at odds about how the I calculations were done don’t do them the post office does so if their batteries are low in the calculators how did this get to be my problem? Well the stand off goes on and on but I must share this quote with you - - April 7 u 1988 Sue from the latest received (funny gets lost in the The quote I have communication how their stuff never mail) is: “ However mistakes committed by postal employees and by customers as well which result in postage deficiencies are not uncommon despite continuing efforts to prevent them from occurring deficiencies Whenever occur our policy is to require payment irrespec” tive of where the cause lies Would I be wealthy if I could do business like the IRS or postal dept Property tax auditors - well after wasting much of my time browsing around my two prehistoric offices they (this required two people) came up with a wonderful figure about 4 times what my shops are worth I was temporarily thrilled and wanted to dash right off to the bank for a healthy loan But the bank would have caught on right away that they were listing equipment twice and other creative things Well after phone calls and letters and letters and temper tantrums and more phone calls it is finally back in the hands of the county auditor where it should have been all along If the auditors had listened to the local people in the first place none of this would have been necessary How much did it cost the taxpayer and how much did it cost me in time and money and blood pressure? The reservoir??? What are we saving the beach for? Didn’t tax money improve it for the enjoyment of the taxpayer? Wouldn’t it have been a nice picnic area for Easter? Well it is election year I am going to ask hard questions (as I have been accused of) and I am going to demand responsibility And I hope I am not the only one Community Calendar Motor Vehicle for the English course That meant that in theory they could accept all the students The test would weed out no one because each class in Japan is expected to hold about 5d students In this school every class has 47 except for the English courses which have 32 and 35 for the juniors ah off year like this one Today when I walked to school it was eerie not to see about 500 high school students all dressed alike also walking Instead I just saw 500 junior high students all dressed in their school uniforms and taxi cabs loaded with students and parents heading to the school Of course they were surprised to see me a gaijin going in the same direction Once on top of the hill they huddled with their friends on the soccer field ready to line up to hear the directions I walked around talking with the students who looked eager to hear a tle English It’s one of the few times that junior high boys have been willing to talk with me Usually they run or shout “Hallo hallo hallo” I figure I’m not quite ready to talk with those kinds But the ones I talked to today were sort of cute wondered where I was from how tall I was One worried about my nose but he only spoke in 0 recognize a few words Japanese Championships pm Jon Huntsman announces gubernatorial candidacy with rally Territorial State House steps 10 am Delta Area changes 84624 to! 735 JAPAN each school In between tests I walked into the were bunched hall and students together studying out of cram books small Bibles that give the most frequently asked questions But I wonder about that Seems more than a little late And no one was to start cramming cramming out on the soccer field this They were talking and morning for than more half an hour laughing In that hall they only had ten minutes between tests I was also surprised to see that boys were in one classroom and girls in another That shouldn’t have surprised me because every class roll lists boys first alphabetically and then girls But it’s so weird to see just a class of boys or girls For the first time this winter there kerosene heaters in the hall Naturally girls were crouched around those warming themselves while they crammed I couldn’t figure out why the heaters were there until I saw a teacher sit at the desk next to the heater He was assigned to watch the students during and in between the tests so the heater was for him As I type this a Japanese teacher next to me is pouring over the math test She’s been working on one problem for about twelve minutes I can hear her sort of talk to herself as she writes figures on the angles of the triangle in the problem I showed a sample of the American ACT test to one of the Japanese math teachers who speaks English He said most of the problems were taught in junior high or sophomore year of high school According to him and many American math teachers the level of math taught in Japanese schools is very high so I can imagine how difficult this test is I have a friend whose Finally daughter is taking the test today My friend has been worried about how well her daughter will do It seems like every time I hear from her she is helping her daughter study or making sure her daughter is studying So the last time I talked with her I asked her why her daughter wanted to go to Akifuchu High School I was expecting her to say “So she could study English” or “It’s a good school” Instead she said “She wants to be able to ride her bike to school" See what I mean A great emphasis is placed on the test but in the long run it’s hard to tell if all that importance is warranted 5 i ‘OeRTH The snow that falls doesn’t last nearly as long the roses around the museum are in the process of being trimmed and political announcements are appearing on television! The old Territorial Statehouse couldn’t be happier The building must be reliving its past of when politicians were walking its corridors and giving speeches in its legislative hall This past week Ted Wilson the Democratic contender for governor visited the museum and announced his candidacy in a speech that stressed economic development education and lower taxes He also toured the museum with his wife and family What makes this interesting is that Mrs Wilson is a “Carling” Abraham Carling was a Fillmore pioneer of 1855 and helped in the construction of the Territorial Statehouse He married Ann Elizabeth Ashman in 1862 and they had 15 children together This big family all married and settled in Fillmore and contributed greatly to the town in both social and civic affairs The museum has Carling portraits and artifacts that were donated to the museum Jon Huntsman who is seeking the nomination also has Republican Fillmore ties He is also planning on visiting the museum and announcing his candidacy Mr Huntsman was bom in Fillmore and his ancestors were also early pioneers Brigham Young sent the James Huntsman family to Fillmore in 1852 The family lived in the southwest corner of the old fort for several years James and Mary Huntsman had 10 children The Huntsman family went on to become very prominent in the Fillmore area owning property stores and hotels The museum also has Huntsman portraits conand artifacts tributed by the Huntsman family What does all this mean come November? Fillmore should be well represented by Mr Wilson as the Democrat and maybe by Jon Huntsman as the Republican depending upon the results of the primary election In any event it should prove to be a very interesting election year!
