The next year she began teaching in her her home town, continuing this work until her marriage to Sydney Gilchrist, May 19, 1898. She helped to organize the Mother's Club which she ever held dear to her heart. She was a member of the Athenian Club of which she was at one time president. Interested in civic progress. she was an ardent worker in the local P. T. A. and a member of the Library Board. A member of the Latter-da- y Saints Church, she affiliated herself at various times with the Sunday School, M. I. A-- , and Primary Associations. After a lingering illness, her death occurred January 25, 1939, eight years and two days after that of her husband. Surviving her are their six children: Sydney Evans Gilchrist of Salt Lake City; Dr. Elvin W. Gilchrist of Bethlehem, Penn.; Robert T. Gilchrist, Mrs. Beth Young, Mrs. Blair Carson, and Richard W. Gilchrist of Lehi; fifteen grandchildren; four sisters: Ida R. and Margaret M. Thurman of Lehi; Mrs. Elgiva E. Allen of Salt Lake City; Mrs. Miriam T. Neils n of Mount Pleasant, and one brother, D. J. Thurman of Salt Lake City. Now lone Thurman Gilchrist has gone where she feels no pain; her earth life is ended. The soul is in capable of death. Funeral services for Mrs. Rachel Gurney Holmes, who passed away at the Lehi Hospital, Wednesday, of pneumonia, were held in the Lehi First Ward Chapel, Sunday, with Bishop's Counselor Lester Peterson, conducting. The grave in the Lehi Cemetery was dedicated by Heber C. Webb. Biographical Sketch Rachel May Gurney Holmes, a daughter of William F. and Sarah E. Webb Gurney, was born Dec. 29, 1888, at Lehi, Utah. She was baptized when eight years of age and always liked to go to Sunday School. She attended the Lehi Public Schools and enjoyed her school work. Her mother died when she was only eleven years old and being the oldest girl, she was left with most of the responsibility of taking care of her father and six smaller children. On March 16, 1920, she was married to David Holmes in the Salt Lake Temple. To this union was born six children, 3 boys and 3 girls; Theron, Elaine, Reed, Olive, Lloyd and Shirley. She was also a good stepmother to four of her husband'ss children, Ambrose, Dorothy, and ReShe is curvived by all of these children, also her father, Wm. F. Gurney and the following brothers and sisters: William J., Francis, Oscar of Lehi, and Mrs. Blanch Ipson of Salt Lake City. She was quiet by nature, but always kind and cheerful. She was a faithful Latter-da- y Sairtf, but having had such a large famiy of children, she was kept pretty much at home. Her husband passed away last March leavng her with the responsibility of rearing these children. She was stricken with pneumonia which resulted in her de&'h on January 25, 1939, in the Lehi Hospital. She died with a firm faith in a Glorious Resurrection and the hope ot a life hereafter.
