Gatrell, 40 N. 100 W. Special lo the Lakeside Review The times of feasting have passes us once again. Perhaps at no other time of year are our bodies exposed to the baddies of our social traditions as they were at Thanksgiving and Christmas time. Only we dont call them baddies-call them goodies. What kind of Christmas cheer would it be anyway if we brought over a plateful of beautifully wrapped uheatgerm or bran bars? We really ought to be more noble at Christmastime and spread a few more healthy items among our friends and neighbors. Secretly and honestly, I am kind of glad were not, because Im a real fruitcake and cookie lover too. But we as a society in the USA (some have called it United States of Abundance) need to be more sensible about both the type and amount of food was infused with music. As a child, she would sit for hours by her sister as the older girl would practice her piano pieces. When her sister would we stop, young Ruth would ask her where she was. When she went to her mother and said she could read music, there was doubt until she proved her powers. Her mother, a musician in her own right, began an instruction program which has touched the lives of thousands. I had to enjoy music to sit by my sister, said Mrs. Gatrell. I loved to hear it, it fascinated me. At five, she was playing the prelude music for her LDS primary organization, at seven she began the piano. We believed the stringed instruments were the nicest instruments, she said. ' Page IB North Edition Lakeside Review ' Wednesday, January 2, 1985 we eat. Whats left for this I want to get out a nice record and cassett of my songs and I want it done right. The real challenge is to tackle the orchestration. I want to learn more about the recording industry," she said. There is truth to the saying you are what you eat, but obviously thats not the whole truth. Our state of health is influenced by physical, psychological, emotional, spiritual factors in our environments, as well as our genetic makeup. There are volumes of material about diet and nutrition, and much of it is unfounded in proven scientific fact. Sometimes all the information makes one think that it is necessary to be an expert in order to eat right. I dont think thats the case, and heres some basic information from which you can form your own sensible eating pattern. If you have no specialized dietary needs, you can balance your diet by including foods from the basic four food groups. (1) Fruit and vegetables - 2 servings daily of each; (2) Grains and cereals - 4 or more daily servings; (3) Milk and dairy products (4) Meats, fish and poultry (including eggs) - 2 or more servings a day. Other general rules that you can follow and bene-- . fit from include; ( ) consuming foods in as close to their natural form as possible; (2) Use the largest -- 1 variety in color and texture at each meal; (3) In elude daily food with high fiber content such as bran, and drink several glasses of water daily. Eating a balanced diet provides the right combinations of nutrients for your body, in most circum- stances without the need for vitamin or mineral supplements. Unfortunately, in the mass production of food and with certain preservation and distribution methods, some vitamin and mineral content may be lost. As a supplement, not a substitute, a general multivitamin capsule daily is an inexpensive bit of insurance. And more is not necessarily better of such vitamins. We have no knowledge of any benefit from large doses of individual vitamins and there are some hazards. SUSAN TANNER HOLMES Review Correspondent Frost granules evaporated from my office window pane. Two sweat suit clad joggers whipped by a neighbor who was out for her early morning walk. I chuckled to myself. Why one earth would anyone want to do that? An expose on the exercise mentality would be just the thing, don't you think, Jacob? I turned around to see the effect of my profound statement. Jacob didnt look up, he just continued to move his animals, cars and people around. People are exercise crazy, I said. Why, my grandmother lived to be 87 and she didnt jog, walk or do aerobics. I do regular finger exercises on the computer keyboard. No fitness program is going to get it claws into me, I just dont enjoy cramped muscles, sweat stains on my T shirts and the forced physically fit attitude. Jacob looked up, smiled and then went back to playing. I knew that I had made a valid point. Actually I look pretty fit for a person whos had six kids, is built close to the ground, and is just 30 plus pounds overweight. At that point my editorial consultant came over and tried to climb onto the small shelf that used to be a lap. Its just writer's block today. No I'm not even considering an 4 exercise program, I looked sternly at my smiling child who had given up his lap sitting efforts and had climbed behind me on a chair and was proceeding to hug me with the choke hold. Yes I was considering exercishad ing. Jeremy, my burst my malaise bubble last week. In a fit of weakness, I had slapped that roll in between the lap and the neck and said, guess Id better get some exercise. Innocently he matter of factly stated, Oh, I just thought you were going to have another baby. No one had ever been so direct. Of course there were a few clues, a sign and one or two moans on the purchase of a new pair of pants and two shirts. The dryer has been shrinking things lately. Exercise makes you feel better, Jacob," I argued. I could get one of those muscle toning machines or bicycles. They are always on sale. I could exercise in my spare time. Of course with my schedule there really isnt much spare time. Who am I trying to kid. It wasnt the cost, the time or the fear that my older boys would demolish the thing within a week. I just wasnt committed. My writers block was getting worse. Maybe if I read the paper--a- h ha, right next to the ad for the hamburgers and chocolate candy was the health spa ad. The health spa, fitness center or whatever they call themselves offered a two week trial membership on their state of the art muscle toning equipment, aerobics, several things I didnt even understand and free babysitting. The free babysitting I understood. Id call just to see how much it cost. After all the location was just down the street from my regular errand circle. What was it my real estate con artist law used to say, location, location, location. Of course it would cost too much.
