Show Thursday, April 12, 2007 Schools The Gunnison Valley Gazette GVMS students vie for King of Fools crown The Gunnison Valley Middle School held their annual King of Fools contest this past week. Eighth grade students were eligible to participate. Each contestant, with the help of their friends and classmates, had to perform a skit, tell a joke and model an outfit for the competition. Sam Hansen and Breanna Fredrickson were crowned the King and Queen of Fools with Zach Bown and Hailey Johnson as first attendants and Brogan Neal and Madison Peterson as second attendants. This is a fun, annual tradition that takes place during the eighth grade assembly held around April Fool’s Day. Page 5 Counselor’s Corner By MRS. LINDA MILLER Each year many of the colleges and universities in Utah offer special summer programs to get high school students on their campuses. One of the opportunities that is offered from Utah State University is Utah Business Week. Utah Business Week is a program designed to teach high school students about business and the American Free Sophomore Week at GVHS Sophomore Week kicked off last week with lots of fun activities to help raise money for next year’s Jr. Prom. Sophomore class officers, Annie Jensen, Trevor Madsen, Cheyenne Thatcher, Chris Jensen and Xavier Jensen, cooked a pancake breakfast for the students and faculty. Competitions such as a paper airplane contest and an arm wrestling contest were held in the cafeteria during lunch each day with prizes for the winners. On Friday, the students were able to participate in Birdie Bingo. This is a contest in which the school grounds were marked off in square grids. Students were able to buy a square on the grid for $3 each. Doug Agren then went up in his ultra-lite and dropped an egg onto the grid. Connor Dyreng bought the square that the egg landed in winning himself a new I-pod. Proceeds form the Birdie Bingo went towards a new mascot for the school. A tailgate party was also held on Friday. Sophomore class officers sold hot dogs and drinks. The officers were able to raise over $200 for their prom next year. Enterprise system. This is an excellent opportunity for students from around the state of Utah to learn from top business professionals. Students are assigned to companies with a business professional who will guide them through the week. Students will get to hear from top speakers on business topics such as accounting, marketing, business ownership, leadership and many more. Students also compete in a business simulation that gives them the opportunity of running a business. Utah Business Week is held at Utah State University July 29 through August 4, 2007. It is open to current high school sophomores and juniors. The deadline to apply is April 30, 2007. For more information log onto www.businessweek.org or see Mrs. Miller at the high school.
