Show Page 4 The Gunnison Valley Gazette U-turns, do you know how to do them? Drivers Education News By JESSE BURRELL The other day I was sitting in the passenger side of the drivers ed car, I spend quite of bit of time here. We were in Richfield working on U-turns. We were at an intersection getting ready to make a U-turn. As we turned hard to make it around into the outside lane, a car came up from the side road and did not stop at the stop line. By the time the person realized that we were in the intersection making a U-turn, we were in front of them and only about three feet away from their car. At this point I was able to make eye contact with the driver; he displayed a shocked look on his face and stopped. The reason I bring up this incident is not so my wife reads it and stresses out and wonders if I have enough life insurance. The reason is so that I can take a minute and remind everyone what a proper Uturn is. Before I visit how to do a proper u-turn, I will tell you of a reminder I had about U-turns many years ago. (I try to limit stories about my past driving mistakes so that these things are not held against me, I don’t want anyone to think that I am or have ever been a perfect driver, I simply have learned a lot over the years and hope to drill it into the students that they don’t have to learn by their own experience that bad things can happen when you break the law or by doing a maneuver the wrong way; they can learn from their parents and teachers by the mistakes that they have made.) Now let’s go back in time to the summer of 1995. I had lived in Gunnison for about a month. One of the reasons I came to Gunnison is because of the small town atmosphere. I wanted to be able to ride my 4-wheeler on the road and enjoy the things that we have the freedom to do here that are not possible in a big city. I was buying a part for my 1975 chev truck. Gunnison Implement, that used to be where Lotsa Motsa is, did not have the part so I was going across the street to NAPA, which used to be next door to Sally’s Nail and Hair. Instead of jaywalking across the street (which is illegal you know) I jumped in the car and did a quick u-turn from the outside west shoulder of the road to the outside east corner of the road in front of NAPA. This is when I got to meet Joel Christenson. He was standing on the sidewalk and waved me over when I got out of the car. He introduced himself and reminded me that U-turns on our main street needed to be done at intersections. I hope you have not lost interest and are still reading the article. Using the drivers Ed handbook and the go ahead from Blane Jensen (Gunnison Police Chief). The following is the proper way to do a U-turn at an intersection. (Please refer to the picture) 1. U-turn on a 4 lane road at an intersection: (example: Gunnison or Manti Main Street) a. Make sure you are the inside (left lane) (or turning lane if it is available) b. Signal left c. Pull slightly into the intersection. (not to deep) d. Make sure the way is clear. e. Turn hard to the left f. Finish in the outside lane. I am not going to take up space doing a step by step for the other maneuvers, The pictures came right out of the Utah Drivers Education Handbook, I think you can see how to do these maneuvers. I know that we are used to doing the “Gunnison U-turn” or the “Sanpete U-turn” as it is also known here in town. The maneuver where you turn the car wide into the intersection to your left and come back near the stop sign is something that will probably always be done here and other rural areas. I just hope we can get used to the correct U-turn so that when someone does it here we don’t try to take them out in the intersection. I cannot tell you how many parents tell me I am teaching their child the wrong way to do this. Whether we like it or not, this is the way that the State of Utah wants it to be done. Below are some different images from the state Drivers ed book for how to do a proper U-turn. Thursday, April 5, 2007 Final Four winner Connor Henline was the lucky winner of the Gunnison Market and Pepsi of Salina Sunkist basketball standard drawing. The market has been gathering entries for the drawing for the past couple of months. The drawing was held on Monday to coincide with the NCAA Final Four Championship game. Congratulations Connor!
