The first an- Outlook of Present Shows UMW and Operators at Considerable Variance Hough days appear ahead for the coal miners and the operators. The decreased production within the nation has brought the wage and security issue to a sharp head once again. The trend throughout the country for 1949 wage contracts is for a stabiliza-tio- n. Few outright increases are being granted. Many of the large unions are attempting to get pensions and greater security. Wage increase demands are small. John L. Lewis has warned his men to get ready for a critical showdown with the operators' when the present contract expires on June 30. Excerpts from a telegram from Mr. Lewis on the coming wage contract is as follows: Each of you knows from bitter experience that you have to fight to retain that which you already possess. Neither you nor the undersigned can recall a time when the coal operators voluntarily on their own motiqn ever granted you a single concession that would improve your lot'. On the contrary, the coal operators have fought constantly and consistept-l- y in opposition to every improvement tbflt you have ever gained, regardless of justification. The signs indicate that you will have to fight again during this year of 1949. So each of you will do well to prepare for it. The man who will not fight to preserve his union, which sustains his family and their living standards and opportunity for his children, deserves no consideration. In view of these facts, each member should tighten his belt, safeguard his earnings and be prepared to execute the policy of our union 1 In Telegraphic Shoot On Founders Day Mining Industry . niversary represented the achievement of the library project which Cultura sponsored. A short and well received program was rendered. Miss Sharon Stoddard gave a very interesting reading that was greatly enjoyed. The history of the club was given by Miss Myrtle Davis. Several brief but interesting talks were made by guests who complimented the club upon the library project and what the library means to the community. Father Sanders congratulated the club upon its accomplishment and promised to solicit books from friends in Salt Lake City. Principal Harold Hansen expressed his surprise at the large number of good books on the library shelves. Mr. Hanson stated that a library was a sign of a progressive community and complimented the ladies on their efHe remarked' favorably forts. about the good juvenile books on the library shelves. Emery Olsen commended the club on the attractiveness of the library room and the number of good books. He spoke of the diligent work of the ladies of the club. Archie Morrison praised the achievement of Cultura. He expressed the hope that the community would take advantage of reading the fine books. The chairman of the Library Board, Mrs. Emily Morrison, extended thanks to the many people who donated the books and cooperated in establishing the li- brary. The window of the rental office is now the showplace of four trophies which have recently been brought to East Carbon. To Carl Garcia goes the honor for placing two of the trophies there. Most impressive or the trophies is the one that he won in the Intermountain AAU Boxing Tournament in Salt Lake City for being the outstanding boxer in the Junior division. Carl also has a trophy for winning the 135-lweight division. The basketball trophy in the window is the Sportsmanship Award won by the East Carbon Rotary basketball team in the Intermountain Junior AAU Basketball Tournament in Salt Lake. The trapshooting trophy is being presented each week to the leading shooter on the Koal Gun Club, and must be won three times before permanent possession can be had. It was last won by Cecil (Zeke) Grider. b: ANSELMO WINS GENEVA MINES BOWLING CROWN Anselmo made a runaway with beneva Mines Bowling League by winning with a 16 second game margin over the place team, Hansen. This would also include a swimming pool. This will be a community-wid- e program. It is only through the cooperation of all that the greatest good can come from such a program. The East Carbon area has made numerous small and successful inroads on the youth activities but it is necessary to expand to the .extent that it reaches into every home and every group of children. Always in the past many youth groups have been left out making it necessary for them to seek their own recreation. Under the present setup these groups will be guided into the proper channels. The youth program has not kept pace with the terrific expansion that has occurred in East Carbon since 1941. Sundoy Public Meeting Votes to Circulate Petition for Signature by Qualified Taxpayers and Electors Over 350 people attended a meeting: called to discuss the pros and cons of incorporating the area known as Dragerton into a city of the third class. , At this meeting it was voted to circulate a petition to incorporate this area together with certain adjacent areas. J. O. Peterson presided at the meeting. Also attending was E. B. Miller, county commissioner, Brig Young, county clerk, and Duane Frandsen, district attorney for the 7th judicial district. Every member of the gun club is allowed to shoot, and the three top winners combined score is the mark entered in the competition with the other thirty-thre- e clubs from five states. Each week the gun clubs are matched against four other' clubs from the 33 en- liminaries and to get a general understanding as to whether the people were interested In Incorporating. The legal steps involved were the signing .of a petition by at least 100 property owners and real tax payers in addition to being a qualified elector in this area. A city of the third ..class is one similar to that under which both Price and Helper operate. Wellington is incorporated under the town provision or clause. One difference between the town and city incorporation is .that the city has broader powers than the town resulting in most, cases, it' was pointed out, In that particularly community being ' ' more progressive. John W. Galbreath and com- - ' panys only interest in the matter is that they are obligated by the government contract with the Geneva Steel company to help the people in any way possible at the time of incorporation. George Galbreath, representative of the Galbreath company, stated that regardless of whether the area is incorporated there will be a charge for water, sewage, rubbish hauling and police protection. If incorporated the charge will be made by the city through taxation. It was estimated that the' total charge 'would be approximately $20.00 a year, per house if incorporated. Class C road money and state liquor money would be given to the city. If not incorporated this money does not come directly into the area. If the charge is made by the Galbreath company It will approximate $3.00 per month per home. The road and liquor money would be in the neighborhood of $12,000 using Price as a basis " tered in the shoot Again being hampered by wind which made the clay pigeons quite unruly, the Dragerton club dropped to a disappointing total of 68x75. However, despite the low score, Dragerton was topped l; by only one opponent the Wyoming, Gun Club. The other three clubs matched against Dragerton were defeated. The first week of the tourney saw the Dragerton boys defeat all their opponents. The defeat by Greybull is the lone defeat for the locals against seven wins, and they now are tied for second place in the tournament The only club to boast a better record than that of the Dragerton club is the Salt Lake No. 2.
