Drug Fiends decade ago, had announced officially that one in every twenty-fiv- e adults were drunkards it would have given an unprecedented impetus to the prohibition movement. How much more startling is, or should be, the official statement that the number of drug addicts in' the United States is estimated at more than 1,000,000. Assuming that addiction to drugs is rare among children, a3 drunkenness was rare among them, we are led to the amazing conclusion that 1,000,000 of our men and women are what are commonly called- dope When you are ready to consider the selection of a Talking Machine, do not fail to Your Present Savings Your Future Hope The old fable of the laboring antand the singing cricket has application to us humans. The committee discovered a condition which calls for an organized movement as powerful, perhaps, as that which, for many years has been combatting the drink evil. If we are to pass from an era of intemperance to an era of drug madness on the scale indicated by the committees report we have not entered upon the golden age predicted by the advocates of prohibition. The committee found that imports of opium had increased. twice as rapidly as the growth of population, that about 90 per cent of the amount of these drugs entered for. consumption is used for other than medical purposes, and that a comparison of the per capita consumption in this country with that of other countries indicates that this country consumes from thirtimes as much teen to seventy-tw- o opium per capita as other countries. The concensus of opinion of adappears to be that the number dicts will increase as soon as the prohibition laws are enforced. These opinions are based on the theory that drinkers will seek a substitute for alcohol. This opinion apparently receives some support from investigations made in some of the southern states, where prohibition lias been in effect for .some years. u XT THAT W the opponents of Undoubtedly will not look with satisfaction upon this report which ?iiiiniiiiiiiiiiiHiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiNiiiiiiiiiiiiiinimtiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii? 9 represents the view of LAdTeS!" itlie special investigating committee whose members were Representative Henry T. Rainey, chairman; Professor Reid Hunt of Harvard university; B. C. Keith, former deputy commissioner of internal revenue and A. G. Du Mez of the public health service. The report is extremely guarded when it says simply that this opinion appears to receive some support. Is it not truer to say that the opinion is almost positively confirmed by the ' fact that the drug habit has rapidly increased during the very period that has marked the triumph of the prohibition movement? It is well ,of course, not to be swept conclu- 9ft our feet by hastily-forme- d sions. We shall hear the report cited by the wets as absolute evidence that prohibition, while stamping out . one kind of inebriety, has fosfered another and more destructive kind. On the other hand, the prohibitionists will go to the extreme of declaring that the increase in the use of drugs is in nowise connected with the closing of the saloons. Youll enjoy your lunch and dinner at the Something Different. ROTISSER1E INN C. NOTHER theory suggests itself as. not wholly unworthy of attention. The quantity of bad liquor .being sold in dry states has increased. The whiskey passed out by the bootmore leggers is more nerve-rackindestructive of will power, more agonizing in . its after effects than the varieties of strong dring served across the bars in the mad, glad, bad days of the saloons. It was formerly the custom of the hard drinkers, eager to escape the tortures of the to tide themselves over with drugs. They drugged their nerves and by more or less easy stages struggled back to sobriety and mental tranquility. Is it not probable that those who have fallen into the sinister clutch of bootlegging whiskey are more inclined to use drugs than were the drinkers at the bar? A F. Apparently the report of the if it strength- ens the cause of any faction .supports those who contended for light wines and beers. They will offer light wines and beer as a remedy not only for the saloon evil, but for the drug evil. It would be absurd to take sides in an issue of this kind without thorough investigation. It would be an addle-patestudent of the question who would change his reasoned judgment merely because a brief synopsis of a government report seemed to lean in a certain direction. On the other hand we would be unwise not to give the report full weight. If our best efforts to obtain prohibition are simply substituting the drug habit for the drink habit we are not gainers, but losers. If 1,000,000 persons are even now using, on an average ten doses of opium or cocaine a day we are already facing a moral crisis as salient and significant .almost, as tho moral crisis involved in (Continued on Page 11.) 60 Years Old Member Federal Reserve System.
