"Utah State 1 Olympic Weight Lifting Championships". ; 4- Some people just dream dreams, others just imagine dreams, and then there are those that set goals and make those dreams come 'J' ) true. Two years ago Troy Gent, f c. a sixteen year old teenager from Beaver, Utah, set a goal to win a Utah State Olympic Weight Lifting 7roy Gent after a finishing Championship disappointing fifth as a high school sophomore. He hung a sign up on his bedroom wall that read, "The will to prepare to win is more important than the will to win." The young man also made signs with his weight lifting goals that he could read dairy and taped these to his walls. Seven hundred and thirty days of reading his goals, hundreds of hours in the weight room and a careful adherence to a positive attitude and a high carbohydrate, low fat diet payed big dividends against the state's best for the high school senior at the Utah State Championships. Troy's state championship did not come easy as Snow Canyon's Nick Lang, benefitting from a home crowd advantage and a 3A State Football Championship ring to prove his time in the weight room, matched Beaver's Gent lift for lift. In the snatch competition, the total was 170 Vi lbs. But the clean and jerk competition was up next. When the Snow Canyon Warrior's attempt at 220 lbs fell short, Beaver High School's lone contestant went for a state record 242 Vi lb. lift. The record, set in 1996 by Matt Reading of Clearfield High School of Northern Utah was 237 14 lbs. A Utah State Championship as well as a new state record was riding on the lift. Dedication, determination and the power of a positive attitude all came together as the lift went smoothly overhead. When the three judges gave the Beaver lifter perfect scores, and the judges white lights flashed on, the new Utah State 1 8 1 lb. teenage lifting champions' body went airborne with a scream even the highly partisan Warrior crowd j - r Louis Chapman, Ingrid Dotson, Shelley Livingston, Kaihy Erickson, Sheri McDermott The Milford Tigerettes presented their review Thursday night to a full house.
