Show s Thursday, October 15, 1959 THE VALLEY VIEW NEWS Page 4 ANYTHING GOES youre tired of paying taxes! Maybe youre So even angry everytime you think of that twenty percent of your income that Uncle Sam takes out for his share. .Youde be a lot angrier when you realize that taxes are like an iceberg, only ten percent of it is visible on the surface, the other ninety percent is hidden from view. Take for an example a loaf of bread that costs you 24 cents in the grocery store. Lets follow it through from the farmer to the housewife. The farmer sells his wheat for $1.73 a bushel. From that bushel you can make 66 loaves of bread that cost the housewife $15.84. Someone is making a lot of dough out of this deal. Lets see who the culprit it. The grocery store makes a profit of 3 cents a loaf. A very fair mark up considering his expenses. After all, he has to pay corporate income tax, he has to contribute to the social security and unemployment tax. He has to pay the tax on his electric light bill. He has to pay taxes on the trucks and taxes on the gasoline and tires he needs to run his trucks. The wholesaler makes less than 120 of a cent on each loaf of bread and hes certainly entitled to that. The sugar, the salt, the yeast, the milk solids and the shortening used in one loaf of bread costs less than V4 of a cent. No matter how you add it up, considering everybodys profit, a loaf of bread should cost no more than 12 cents. But someone is getting the other 12 cents for doing nothing. Who is the culprit? You guessed it, Uncle Sam and his hidden taxes. But Uncles Sam isnt alone; hes got 50 states to help him pick the pockets. They are the ones who double the price of almost everything you buy. Now youre getting the idea why a loaf of bread sells for 24 cents instead of 12 cents. The taxes the farmer has to pay are included. The mill has to pay seven federal taxes and eight separate state taxes. These are included in your loaf of bread. The railroads that haul the flour have to pay five federal taxes plus the state taxes of every state they pass through. These are added to the loaf of bread. The sugar refiner has to pay eight federal and no less than six state taxes. The warehouse where the flour is stored hqs to pay taxes. The shortening manufacturer, the yeast factory, and the producer of milk solids have to pay taxes. And these were all added to the price of your loaf of bread. We then have to arrive at the conclusion that people are the only ones that pay taxes. The ultimate By Rolf W. Local Church News Kay consumer, the guy that buys the loaf of broad or the quart of milk, hes the only one that pays taxes. Corporations dont pay taxes; manufacturers dont pay taxes; tranportation concerns dont pay taxes. They merely add these taxes to whatever theyre selling and you and I are the one that pay the taxes. And we pay these taxes after Uncle Sam has already taken 20 per cent of our salary in taxes before we can spend a dime of it. In one loaf of bread there are 151 separate taxes that you and I pay for. In a quart of milk there are 206 distinct taxes that we pay for. When you buy a car nearly $300 have already been added in the form of hidden taxes. Add to that, the taxes the dealer pays, taxes on income, property taxes, license tax and sale tax and you realize that h of the price of the car is for taxes over Then, of course, you start paying, taxes on the gasoline and oil you use to run the car. Even the air you use in your tires has four hidden taxes in it. The power to run the compressor motor is taxed the oil for the compressor is taxed, the rubber belts are taxed and you have the tax on the compressor itself. So when youre getting free air, youre still paying for it somewhere along the line. People are the only ones that pay taxes. When you hear that corporation taxes are going up, dont feel that its an advantage. The corporations will simply add this tax on whatever they make or sell and you pay for it in the long run. For the small wage earner, hidden taxes are far more deadly than income taxes. The poor man pays twelve cents in taxes on a loaf of bread just the same as the rich men. So, dont feel sorry for the rich man who is in the 80 percent bracket. Its the poor man who is still paying the bulk of the tax load. And the next time you read about Congress voting another billion dollars in foreign aid, just remember that its going to cost every American family another $25.00. And youll pay for it, dont you worry. It may not be in income tax, but rest assurred that theyll get it out of you in hidden taxes of some description. secret in the world today is the The best-keamount youre paying in taxes. A ladys hat har over 150 separate taxes on it. Gasoline would sel' for two cents a gallon if it werent for taxes. And Congress is going to try to raise axes again. Public Enemy Number One is has has been for a long time TAXES.
