Show i r ri rif- - i -liwwm nin ur r-'r- 1 MIDWINTER MEETING Of the Utah County Teacher's Teach-er's Association. An Interesting Session "Reason "Rea-son and the Will" Ably Discussed . About fifty teachers and several prominent visitors were in attendance at the midwinter meeting of the County Coun-ty Teachers Association on Saturday last. Supt. Wilson called the meeting to order at eleven o'clock and complimented compli-mented the teachers on the interest manifested in these gatherings. Prof. Merrill presented the subject of "Reason and the Will." The gentleman briefly reviewed, and referred refer-red in a complimentary way to "Talks on the Mind" heretofore presented to the association by Prof. Iteea. He then proceeded to classify the mental powers, by appropriate illustrations Horn the fields of logic and mathematics, mathema-tics, and entered into his subject with abilit.y t hough the half hour alioted was not sufficient to cover the whole subject. sub-ject. A brief discussion followed, iu which Messrs". Brimhall, ilees and Whitecot-ton Whitecot-ton participated. Recitation,"The Death Bed of Benedict Bene-dict Arnold," was rendered in a thrilling thril-ling and tragic style by Prof. J. B Walton. Response to the sentiment "Education, the safest defence of the Nation" by D. II. Robison, was made in a brief, clear and argumentative manner. Song by Miss Laura Webb. Method of Teaching Language Lessons Les-sons and Composition, by Miss Josephine Joseph-ine Kellogg, the prize essayist on ttjat subject at the Territorial Fair, was full of eloquence and suggestion. Supt. Wilson took occasion to remark re-mark that if there was one sut'ject of more importance than anot her in the school curriculum that subj-ct is language; th-At branch should receive daily attention in oil departments and grade; that language could never rise higher than thought, and was frequently far behind it. "flow to Keep Abreast of the Times, Professionally," was the subject sub-ject of an awakening talk by Prof. Brimhall, who treated the topic under the following heads: 1. what; a. reducing friction to a minimum: b.. increasing speed to a maximum; ;, multiplicity of the factors of power. 2. How; a, by never being satisfied; b. by desire of will action; c, by individual indi-vidual effort; thinking, reading, writing; d, by mutual effort, classes, associations. 3 Why; a, to prevent decay; b, to provide a living forma tion of truth; c, to meet the demands of the times. W.W.Billings handled school discipline discip-line well. In a five minutes speecn, but did not have a very high opinion of the moral tendency of childhood. Prof. A. L. Bootli elucidated the Metric System of Weights and Measures, Meas-ures, showing the simplicity and advantage ad-vantage of this system over our pre-sen pre-sen rulers.
