Subsequent developments showed how utterly correct we were and that we knew Mr. Morrison-bettethan he knew himself. It is doubtful if the theatre going public could'picture Mr. Morrison as a hero of a domestic story, written upon conventional lines, However, if Mr. Morrison should at some future time become the reflected splendor of some dramatic pagenty the plumed hero, of some romantic play we would still see, beneath his burnished coat of mail, the red garments, of Goethes Mephisto burning with crimson persistency. And the imagination, thus seeing Mephisto, would easily conjure up the flaxen haired Marguerite, who would at once take the place of the irincess in the aforesaid ramantic drama; bo that, after all, sitting at the diamond shaped window of a crumbling castle, we would see, not the lady of quality, timidly inviting, but the modest fraulein, invitingly timid. It is no use, Mr. Morrison, you cant get away from a perpetual suggestion of the red and fretful Mephisto no matter into what dramatic excesses you may plunge before your stage career is ended. r . . ft ft Last Sunday evening Bandmaster Held waved the baton at his twenty-nin- th consecutive concert. Whoever said that comparisons are odious made an easy escape' by means of an epigrammatic convenience. It is evident that the writer was not a Salt Laker and a regular attendant at the Held concerts, for had he been both, comparisious would not only have been odious, as a general proposition, but in this particular case, impossible. Mr. Donelsons banjo solo, Normandy, accompanied by the band was a pleasing and agreeable musical innovation and caught the. fancy of the audience. Mr. Fred Grahams tenor solos, especially The Sweeter Story Ever Told, gave splendid opportunity for him to charm us with a voice' naturally sweet and clear. Balfes beautiful.. Siege of Rochelle, was charmingly plaved by the band as was also Dalbya National Fantasia, in which the various national airs were so thickly paraded as to almost crowd upon each others musical heels. I thoroughly enjoyed the melodious flights, which escaped from the brass and reed instruments all through the sprightly King Dodo selections. The Hungarian Rhapsody No. 2, as arranged by Gilmore, gave Mr. Held a magnificent opportunity to demonstrate the musical proficiency to which he has brought his band. Sousas, Alabama Dance, closed the program. , . ft ft Next Friday evening, Trelawny of the Wells will be rendered by the University Dramatic club. It is.a crisp four-acomedy with an atmosphere and bright sparkling, while the dialogue is impulsively rapid and verbally brilliant. The play calls for a number of clever character roles which makes it, altogether, the most difficult drama yet attempted by the University students. Prof. Maud May Babcock has been so faithful and insistent in her rehearsals of the company, , may look for that(e both some dramatic surprises in individual deportment and collective movement, which will largely remove the usual awkwardness of the amateur. Like all .the previous productions of the club, Trelawny is a royalty play for the use of which the students go ct , , . |
