Under the caption: "Sinoot, Tribune's Trib-une's Bete Noire," the Ogdon Standard Stand-ard has the following to say: "The Trlbuno has been asserting with much reiteration that Senator Smoot Is without Intlucnco with the national administration. Now that paper is busy charging Smoot with having induced tho administration to discriminate against Salt Lake City by selecting Provo as one of tho registry reg-istry points and the plices for tho drawing In the opening of the Ulntnh reservation. Everything commendable commend-able In tho eyes of Salt Lakers is credited to ono of tho Tribune gang; whatever Is represented to bo opprobrious oppro-brious Is charged to Senator Smoot. Such a campaign Is effective until the people discover tho deception and misrepresentation, then oven the Tribune's Tri-bune's followers aro filled with disgust. dis-gust. That which makes tho Standard's position more tenable Is tho fact that Senator Smoot know no more about llcatlon of a registration ofllco at Provo Pro-vo than did Owen Smoot, his brother, neither did the senator havo anything to do with tho selection of tho place. That matter was adjusted by an agent sent out by tho general land ofllco, who selected Provo without asking tho advice of any ono, and who, upon arrival at Provo conferred with no ono except tho mayor of tho town, Hon. William M. Roylance, and absolutely abso-lutely declined to meet Senator Smoot for tho expressed reason that ho wasn't thero to meet senators, congressmen, con-gressmen, or other people, but to locate lo-cate a registration ofllco in accordance accord-ance with instructions received. |
