Show THE COMMON ENEMY. Hon. William Spry, chnlrman of the Republican state committee, was a visitor at the city committee rooms Friday Inst and encouraged tho boys immensely by his expressions of con-lldcnco con-lldcnco and words of good cheer. When asked what ho thought tho chances wero of success, ho looked around him, evidently intent upon sizing siz-ing up tho situation from behind tho footlights, and with a smilo of satisfaction satis-faction replied: "There nro no signs of defeat here, nnd I so no reason why you should not win this light with hands down. Thorough organization organ-ization and absoluto conlldenco will hold tho votes that' aro naturally nat-urally yours, nnd that is all you want. Salt Lnko City is nnturally Republican Republi-can by nn overwhelming majority, and it Is only by somo extraordinary blunder or omission on our part that the Democrats ever havo or over can hope to win nn election In Salt Lako. However, thero Is an extraordinary condition existing In this campaign for which loyal Republicans aro not responsible, but which thoy aro compelled com-pelled to stand for, that makes the fight net only unique but difficult. Because Be-cause of tho peculiarly unpopular and vengeful nature of tho third party tactics, tac-tics, they havo earned for themselves tho unenviable position of common enemy, to the extent that citizens of all classes, Irrespective of politics, aro arrayed against them. This makes It exceptionally difficult for tho Rcpubli- fl cans, inasmuch as tho political cle- incut now recognized as tho common enemy wns once heforo defeated by a resort to Democratic candidates. At that time, however, thero was no other recourse for thoso who felt that a rebuke was in order. It is different this fail, Republicans havo a ticket en- tlrcly frco from the taint of bossism and they havo tho votes to elect It. Tho surest way to defeat tho common enemy is for Republicans to veto tho Republican ticket; if they do, tho election is won. Tho Democratic ticket cannot bo elected without Re- publican votes, even though ovory Democrat now training with tho Mav erlck party wero to conio back into (ho fold. "Defeat tho 'American' party this fall by tho election of tho Republican candidates, nnd my opinion Is that you will hear nothing more from them; defeat them by the election of tho Democratic ticket, and tho rout will only bo temporary, you will havo tho fight nil over ngaln nnd with your own forces weakened." |
