Show Volume XIV Issue XIV The Ogden Valley news Page 13 October 1, 2007 Ogden Valley Triathlon Tries New Location By Kera Erickson The fifth annual Ogden Valley Triathlon was held Saturday, September 15. In past years the swim has been held at Cemetery Point, with transitions for the bike and run located within Huntsville town. This year the event moved to the Pineview West Marina where approximately 800 athletes came out to participate. The Ogden Valley Triathlon was put on in partnership with TriUtah, and The Ogden Valley Business Association. Milliseconds Sports Timing provided the timing chips and all race results for the event. With the donation of time and services from many Valley sponsors, The Ogden Valley Business Association was able to organize a successful event with a portion of the race proceeds going to Ogden Valley Pathways. Unlike last year, when temperatures hovered in the thirties, this year, triathlon athletes were greeted with pleasant weather. By the time the first wave of the race started at 10:30 a.m., temperatures were already reaching eighty degrees and climbing. Athletes signed up for the Olympic distance or the Sprint distance race. The Olympic distance included a 1.5K swim, 30.5 mile bike, and a 10K run. The Sprint Triathlon participants (left to right) Katie Wewer and Amy Cain. distance was a little more forgiving with a 750 meter swim, 15.3 mile bike ride, and then a 3.1 mile run. Triathletes lined up along the beach at the West Marina, while spectators crowded around to take photos of their family and friends in their wetsuits and colorful swim caps. The athlete’s conversations turned to their training experiences. Some were wellexperienced triathletes, while others were community members ready to try the event for the very first time. Athletes discussed the obstacles they had overcome to get in shape for a triathlon. Some had worked through serious injuries, had recently had a baby, or had lost a significant amount of weight. Others were reaching an age milestone and were celebrating turning thirty or forty. Don Mignola of Salt Lake City was 77 years old. The youngest participant was 12 year old Alex Bowcut of Holladay, Utah. All the athletes and spectators became silent and put their hands to their heart as the American flag was brought down to the beach. Zoe Wimmer gave a heartfelt rendi- tion of the National Anthem. The race began with all men participating in the Olympic distance event lining up waist deep in the water off Pineview Shore. The announcer counted down from ten and then arms and legs were flailing and churning in the water as the racers took off. Buoys were set up in the lake in a triangle shape that measured off 750 meters. All Olympic racers swam two laps around the buoys. Approximately seven minutes later, the women’s Olympic class lined up to start their wave of the race. The next waves to begin were the Sprint racers divided up into waves based on age. All Sprint athletes swam once around the buoys to equal a swimming distance of 750 meters. A f t e r exiting the lake, athletes ran up to the south Twelve year old Zoe Wimmer parking area of Eden sings the National at Pineview West Marina. Anthem. They scrambled to strip off their wetsuits, grab their bike gear, and begin the biking section of the race. Athletes rode up out of the marina and then around Pineview Dam. Olympic athletes made two loops around the dam, while Sprint athletes completed one loop. All athletes were instructed to ride on the right side of the road, and to only move out to the left to pass another rider. Bikers were supposed to make a pass within fifteen seconds. Bikers were instructed to be cautions and be considerate of automobiles and all traffic laws. If a biker did not correctly pass, blocked other riders, or rode too closely to other bikers, race officials could give them a time penalty. After completing the bike portion of the race, athletes then quickly changed from bike shoes to their running shoes. Racers ran up out of the marina and then clockwise going towards Eden on the shoulder of the road. Sprint racers turned off approximately one and a half miles up the road, and intersected onto the North Arm trail where they ran back towards the finish line at the West Marina. Olympic athletes ran up past the Eden Park where, at a designated spot, they turned around, ran back, got on the trail starting at North Arm, and proceeded back to the finish at the West Marina. After finishing the race, athletes received bottled water and snacks, and massages were available on site. Various local businesses set up booths to provide food and services for both athletes and spectators. There was a bounce house for the children. Shades of Gray provided live entertainment. Later that afternoon, an awards ceremony was held where all athletes that placed within their division received awards.
