Tanner, age 90, died Monday, August 12, 2002 at McKay-Dee Hospital from causes incident to age. He was born August 22, 1911 to A. Z. and Vera Noall Tanner. He grew up in Davis County, attended Davis High School and the University of Utah, and received his medical training at Harvard Medical School, class of 1935. After internships in California, he completed his residencies at Peter Bent Brigham and Boston Children’s Hospital in Boston, Massachusetts, in plastic, general and pediatric surgeries. He served in the Army during World War II as a member of the Harvard Overseas Unit in the European Theater. The 5th General Hospital Unit was where he continued to develop his reconstructive and plastic surgery skills. It was there that he met, wooed and wed a nurse from Massachusetts, Dorothy F. Smith. After their discharges from the service, Dr. Dean W. and Dorothy S. Tanner returned to Utah. Dean opened his practice in 1946 in downtown Ogden. During his 50+ years of practice, he served at both St. Benedict’s and Dee Hospitals. He was Chief of Surgery at the McKay-Dee for 12 years, Assistant Clinical Professor of Surgery at the University of Utah Medical School from 1946-1992, and was an energetic member of the Ogden Surgical Society. He served at primary Children’s and the VA Hospitals in Salt Lake City. He was elected to the Board of Governors of the American College of Surgeons from 1978-1981, the first doctor from Utah to serve on this board. Dean lost his adored Dorothy on June 28, 2000, their 55th wedding anniversary. He was cared for, supported and loved by his children: Diane (Pete) Temple, La Verne, CA; A. Zack (Michelle) Tanner, Eden; Dean W. (Mary Susan) Tanner, Anchorage, AK; Pamela (Chris) Muray, Moab, UT; Lisa (Jerry) Zietz, Banks, OR; Trudie (Steve) Edward, Clinton, WA; Bill (Rachelle) Tanner, Valdez, AK; and Tom Tanner, Troutdale, OR. Also surviving are three siblings: O. Ralph Tanner and Joseph B. Tanner of Palo Alto, CA, and Arleen (Hank) Ruggeri, Grand Junction, CO: and twelve grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his brother Noall Z. Tanner. Dr. Dean loved his family, ranching, riding horseback, skiing and being outdoors. He devoted his time to his surgical practice, and was known for his long days and late office hours. He expected the best from people because that was what he gave. Private graveside services were held at the family’s request on August 15, at Kaysville Cemetery. A memorial service was held on August 22. The family feels that a kind word to a loved one, a visit to a shut-in, a hike in the woods, a gift to Harvard Medical School, the Ogden Nature Center or the charity of your choice would be a tribute that their beloved father would appreciate.
