Show SEVIER COU NTY FAIR WAS GREAT SUCCESS A splendid exhibition and a fine daiby program A very large attendance the sevier county fair opened on oil thursday good weather was one of the most flattering accompaniments and the grounds had been put into elegant condition many new stalls erected the whole presenting a very jaunty effect the opening day as is always the case was not largely attended because it has become a fixed idea with many patrons that the real opening day of the fair when things begin to jingle is on friday A quite notable feature this year was a very creditable showing made by owners of live stock sheep cattle and swine all these departments were brimming full on thursday and the showing was such as to elicit many exclamations of surprise and pleasure from visitors cattle and sheep especially were present in great number and the showing made was vas better than in any former exhibition As might have been expected and as the reaper had predicted predict eJ el the display made in the agricultural and horticultural departments was not what it might have been had the season been more prop propitious etious the growing season in the sevier valley this year has been a remarkably short one and heavy frost in june nipped much of the garden vegetation e again there were heavy frosts last week which spelled ruin to many gardens and put to an end the idea in the mind of many growers to display their products at the county fair the wonder is that there was any showing madeam made at all still a very creditable display of garden products was made by a limited number of growers and they caught the eye of all visitors who had bad been led to believe that it would be impossible to make any sort of an exhibit of vegetables or flowers in the agricultural building there were many really fine exhibitions of farm products including grains and grasses corn and potatoes speaking of the latter there was one of the finest showings made of potatoes than in many years past potatoes winked and blinked at a visitor from every section of the hall ball they were fine fellows too commanding respect from farmers and town people alike the potatoes every one exhibited were symmetrically shaped clean and without a trace of a disease which in fo former years depreciated their value there were other showings made of vegetables J S tuttle the glenwood enwood GI gardener made an excellent display of his his garden gabaen pro ducts which included all the good old standbys stand bys squashes beets cabbages turnips etc W J camp of annabella also made a unique and pleasing exhibit of garden truck embracing tomatoes and a general line of vegetables these two gentlemen were among the very few exhibitors hibi tors and it is unnecessary to state that they walked away with all colors and hues of ribbons in the home E economics cono hall there was a varied huge and wonderful showing of pastries bread and cakes canned goods etc arranged as only the horne home economics ladies can do under any and all circumstances visitors to this department discovered that they could easily spend hours in inspecting the display made by this most worthy association actually a few peaches and apples were on exhibition in the agricultural hall walter brown of joseph made a creditable sh showing owing i of apples and alma murphy of salina trumped him with some fine specimens of peaches apples and water melons in the art hall which as in former years was jn in charge of mrs C E west of salina a most gorgeous showing of and childrens ren I 1 p work was made everything was ar ranged arranged neatly in good position and the place was continuously thronged thron ged with visitors it was one of stac the most fascinating departments on the grounds I 1 the poultry pens were ahead of if former ormer years making macinga ma kinga a fairly good i showing many fine birds of many types were on exhibition and not a few fanciers were awarded awarded meritorious it premiums A pleasing and unusual feature on anthe the fair grounds was the daily ni musical us ical program three bands were present each playing snappy and catchy selections of popular airs airs the monroe band appeared on T thursday hurs day the richfield on friday and the elsinore band on saturday fridays friday s attendance on the fairgrounds it ro u n d s w was as p phenomenally hen omen ally large it certainly c r t a in ay m must u s t have been gratifying to fair officials demonstrating that the public recognizes the importance of attending and encouraging so important an event as aa the annual exhibition made by the wideawake wide awake farmers api arians and vegetable and flower growers in this part of utah there came near being coshow no showing of flowers by the way last weeks frosts partially ruined the dahlias kahlias and other tender plants but a few growers managed to r rescue some of their best specimens from the clutches of the frost king and made very creditable displays henry borg and his wife showed very daintily some beautiful dahlias kahlias and asters as also did mrs W T orrock and mrs H H HP petersen etersen the flowers were novelties and they were greatly admired by all visitors other exhibitors hibi tors were mrs C E west and mrs A J crosier of salina who had some beautiful roses on exhibition the fair closed on saturday the receipts were satisfactory and the attendance was greater than in any year preceding it was a successful exhibition in every way and it makes clear sailing for a greater and better fair next year the reaper this week has made no effort to write up the fair in a manner which it deserves A for its publisher has spent much of his time on the grounds and is relying upon his memory to chronicle the various attractions as he saw them and that is all any agy fellow can do under ci circumstances r cum stances the reaper being issued on saturday is unable to give a report of all the races which were among the salient attractions of the fair however it publishes below the result of the races on thursday and friday which shows that there was something doing all along the line in a sporting sense thursday afternoons schedule was as follows the opening race was a half mile running contest with a purse of to the winner horses entered were trulene Tru iene owned by A E
