I was much impressed yesterday while going through the reading room in the Public Library to notice that the daily papers from England, Scotland, Ireland, Canada, New Zealand and Australia are free o.f the screaming headuues announcing the worst crimes in the world such as disgrace the first page of the American daily papers. On. the first page of all the daily papers of these countries are advertisements, an,c within are the reading pages. Niwsboys here never mention crimes as an induce ment to get people to buy their papers as in so commonly done in America. These comparisons and others that might be made in favcr of New Zealands are reasons, vyhy anybody who is interested in human conservation does not have his- - feelings ruffled as much bere as in our land of the free and home of the brave. While we can learn many things from New Zealanders, there is at least one thing in which America is setting the pace, and that is in Prohibition. The drink evil has not by any means been overcome in the U. 8. but it has been greatly reduced. I saw more drunkenness on two Saturday aftednoons and evenings in Auckland than in ten months last year while lecturing in states and crossing the twenty-fiv- e continent twice. The Viotoria Anti-LiquLeague of Melbourne, Australia, sent Gifford Gordon to the United States to spend a year studying the Prohibition question. He wrote a booklet giving the results of his investigations that should be read by everybody. He showed that violation of the law is news, observance of the law is not news, that is why the opponents of Prohibition make as good a showing as they do. I am so imrpessed by his booklet that we are going to print all of it in the Character Builder. Some of the best endorsements that our work has ever received were given there. Mr. Nat S. Mollean, Manager of the Alexander Young Hotel, the leading one on the Hawaiian Islands became so Interest ed in our work that he Invited us as his guests during the laat week of our stay in Honolulu and gave us some of the finest rooms in that high class hotel. We spent a week in Hllo schools nd while there went with Heber Grant and family to see the wonderful volcano near there. The fountains and rivers of molten lava made auch an impression upon our minds that will last for a lifetime. Many people go thousands of miles to see that winderful volcano because It is per-- tie most wonderful one In the world. It Is worth seeing, but a rreater satisfaction rnrme from the work done In the schools. On the way from Honolnlu to New Zealand we spent a day In Suva on the FIJI Island. There as on the Hawaiian I.lands the natives are not disposed to cultivate cane used In manufacturing sugar which Is the leading product of both Islands. Hindus have been bro.ught from India to the FIJI Isalnds to do the work. Japanese do most of the work on the Hawaiian Inlands and are now more numerous than all the other races combined. Many Interesting articles on the countries we visit are being published in the Character P.ullder. Independence, .Missouri, which you can get for $1 a year.
