Nephi businessmen and citizens generally are feeling deeply the terrible loss that has come to the Salt Luke Route by reason of the annihilation of over one hundred in the Meamiles of its road-be- d dow Valley wash. Without a doubt this is the greatest calamity that has ever happened to a railroad company in this or perhaps any other country. The enormity and seriousness of the loss is just beginning to dawn upon the jieople. When the news first came, it was thought that the washout- was buta reietition of that of two or three years ago, and the damage would in a short time be repaired. Hut not so. At present, the railroad officials are simply dazed and baffled. To along the old route would be simply the greatest folly. The Dixie route is suggested; but if any one has ever traveled over the road to that section of the state, he would know, without beingan engineer, - re-bui- ld that a railroad could make the trip down that way, but how it would ewr haul any passengers or freigl.t on iu return trip is beAnd yet, yond comprehension. would like very lrsonal'y, wo much to .; the railroad go via Dixie, th pleasantest and most fruitful st l in Utah. C. has had to close down its mill. The flouring mills have lost a big portion of their trfde; the cattle snippers arc cut off from their big packing house trade with Ixu Angeles, and business generally in Nephi is const j i c ntly affected. Put we of east Juab County arc not by any means grieving solely lx.ci.use of our own loss, but fur tl.i; reason that the Salt Lake Koct? officials have alway done the uiuare thing by this community, and have ondearet themselwM to the ionle here, The freight rate alone of $3. c ton from Nephi to Colton, Cal fornia, made it possible to thip the products of our mills to Cali fornia markets with a living profit to the shipiers. The Salt Lake Route cannot le classed as one of the soulless coronations, of this section ex and the t tend thir commiser ation, a1 they would to a friend end pul Yc litncfactor. s pint-cres- ford the river, but this is danger ous not only to horses but to hu man lives as well. With so many reservoirs located on the upper waters of the river, it keeps it always so high that it cannot be forded without the greatest danger; and, in fact, it is practically unfordable nine months out of the year. We believe that our board of commissioners have the interest at heart, of not only the settlers along the river, but of this section as well, which will be greatly benefitted by getting a larger volume of business, be cause of the rpad to our' mills and business houses being made more easy to travel. The ambition t of the ancient Romans was to make Rome the center of the commerce of the world, and by bridging the rivers, dredging the harbor.and making all roads lead to Rome, their ambitions were realized, and every nation not only carried its products to this great commercial center to sell, but brought their gold and silver with which to buy their supplies at the world's greatest market place. Let us here in Nephi and east Juab County work to have all roads lead to this business section of the county. ; Ward Meetings. At the meeting in the tabernacle Sunday afternoon, Mr. Memmott of Scipio, who is visiting with his son J. E. Memmott, was called upon to address the meeting. J. F. Quist also spoke, and made an interesting address. He told of how in his boyhood he was lame and physically unwell for a long time, and that he was restored by the power of the priesthood. Bishop Pettegrew also addressed the congregation briefly. The Second ward meeting was also a good one. A vocal duet was rendered by the Misses Kate and Lilly Pexton! which was pleasing to all. The choir sang exceptionally well . The meeting was addressed by Robert Winn, John McPherson, and Pres. J. W. Paxman, who discoursed on the general principles of the gospel. There was a good program at the First Ward Mutual P. P. cnnstison addressed the young people on the advantages for im provement offerd by the Mutual. A piano solo was well rendered by Miss Evangeline Greenwood. The Apollo quartette of the High School sang a song in splendid voice. Arthur Ellison and Leon Christison handled the lesson topics of Instincts, Appetites, and Emotions. Local Notes. W. W.
