There is usually a reddish mark in the underside of the globular abdomen in the shape of an hourglass. Black widow spiders are timid by nature. When they are accidentally squeezed or threatened they will bite in self defense. The venom is highly toxic and affects the nervous system. The female bite (males are incapable of biting) causes extreme pain which usually extends to the abdominal muscles. Bites have been known to kill humans, but this is rare. No deaths have ever been recorded in Utah. Wayne at Milford Milford Classic Volleyball Tourney In both Gyms at Milford A few specimens have come Black widow. Since Roe's first positive identification, he has documented more than 400 hobo spider specimens from Northern Utah. The three counties with the highest about it, really, considering how common they are," Roe said. "I am now only a little bit more leery about reaching into corners around my home." Here is what to took for in all three spiders, what their bites are like and suggestions for control. Bryce Valley at Milford Opening Roe, USU Extension insect diagnostician. Roe, who was the first to document the existence of the hobo spider in Utah Only one hobo spider specimen has been identified south of Utah County, he said. “If you spot one of these spiders in your home, I wouldn't be that worried Sept. 6 Sept. 7 Oct. 25 On the other hand, if you have entomological leanings and a soft spot for arachnids, carefully trap it and release it elsewhere. If you don't mind the company, a black widow spider is an excellent predator and can be a good friend to a gardener, said Jay Karren USU Extension entomologist. In Utah there are only three spiders that people are better off avoiding - the black widow, hobo spider (formerly called the aggressive house spider) and the sac spider. They are all venomous and are all fairly common in Utah, says Alan © from Box Elder, with more in Weber, Davis and Salt Lake counties. There has never been one identified from Tooele County and very few from Utah County. Fri. Sat. This spider, apparently introduced from Europe earlier this century and first reported in Seattle in 1936, is fairly large. From leg tip to leg tip, it can measure up to 5 centimeters (2 inches) in diameter, with a body length of about 2 centimeters (3/4 inch). It may have been given the "aggressive" designation from the observation that it is more likely to attack when provoked or threatened. It has been reported that it tends to run toward a perceived threat instead of away from it. Like its smaller cousin, the domestic house spider, it is brown with grayish markings on the abdomen. Unlike its relative, however, hobo a do not have darker bands around their legs. Hobo spiders build funnel-shaped webs in dark, moist areas, often” in baseients, window wells, wood piles and around the perimeter of homes. Due to their size, they rarely climb vertical surfaces and are seldom found above. basements or ground level. They are fast runners, however, attaining speeds up to 2 mph. Males this time of the year are wandering in search of females. These courtiers are at the end of a two-year life cycle. Most will die by the end of September. Oregon State University Extension reports that bites from these spiders are seldom painful, but a small, hard area typically appears within 30 minutes, surrounded by an expanding red welt that may reach 5-15 centimeters in diameter (2-6 inches). Blisters form within 15-35 hours, which eventually crust over the cratered wound. A scab can develop over necrotic, or dead tissue that eventually sloughs off. In some cases, tissue loss is so severe that surgical removal of damaged tissue and repair are needed. The fully developed lesion may take only been reach 3 centimeters (just over an inch) or more in diameter. A lesion may several months to heal, and frequently leaves a permanent scar, but necrosis occurs in about half the cases. No confirmed ‘human deaths from bites have recorded. Bites commonly occur when a person picks up firewood with a spider on it or when a spider finds its way into clothing or bedding. These spiders can be avoided by keeping beds away from basement walls and removing bed skirts in basement rooms that are easy for these spiders to crawl up. Sac spider. These spiders aren't plentiful, but aren't uncommon in Utah either. They are plain, without obvious markings, medium in size and yellow to yellow-greenish in color. Their long abdomens are slightly flattened. These hunting spiders do not build webs, but construct a flat tubular sac opened at both ends in a rolled leaf, crevice, under loose bark or stones. This spider, which is scattered throughout the United States, has a venomous bite, but not deadly. If you have been bitten or spot what you think might be one of these three venomous spiders, try to trap and submit it for identification. There is a diagnostic lab at USU, 801-797-2435. Specimens can also be taken to your county USU Extension office. Office addresses are listed in the white pages under Utah State University. The likelihood is very good that at least one of these three spiders lives in or around your house. Ifyou don't want any of them them around, make it difficult for them to exist. Sanitation is critical in successful spider control, Roe said. This includes: *Sealing your house. Use a caulk gun and fill in any cracks and crevices inside your basement. You'll want to block all potential entrances. Install screens as needed. *Cutting away grass. Cut grass and plants back from around your house foundation, *Cleaning your basement Go around your basement with a strong suction vacuum cleaner and remove all spider webs, egg sacs and spiders. Use a dust mop, stiff broom and dustpan when needed to help discourage establishment. Move and dust often behind and under furniture, stored materials, wall hangings and corners of ceilings. *Eliminating prey. Bear in mind that all three of these spiders are predators. Eliminate other household pests (prey) such as flies, ants and cockroaches, which attract spiders. *Removing moisture. Be sure to control excess moisture and humidity, keeping basements, crawl spaces, porches, etc., as dry as possible. *Cleaning outdoor debris. Clean up woodpiles, trash, rocks, compost piles, old boards and other debris outdoors where spiders live. Deer said there are pesticides available for controlling spiders that allow people to treat the problem themselves without having to pay a professional applicator. For indoor treatment, you can use aerosol or mist application of pyrethrins and piperonyl butoxide for quick knockdown and kill of spiders. Some sprays are available that shoot out in liquid form and then turn to electrostatic dust that spiders pick up as they walk around. Roe said another effective deterrent is to place sticky traps that are used for trapping mice and cockroaches. |
