Show Republicans Learn Details Of Primary Garfield County Republicans met Tuesday night in Tropic to meet candidates for county commission com-mission seat C currently held by long standing Commission Chair Louise Liston who has announced her retirement, elect a replacement for county Republican vice-chair Debbie Hatch and develop plans and assignments for the Republican County Convention on Apr. 11. They also heard information from Lt. Gov. Olene Walker about the Western States Presidential Primary set for Mar. 10. Legislation for Utah's first Presidential Primary was passed during the 1999 Legislative session (See REPUBLICANS on page 3-A) REPUBLICANS From Front Page with support from both parties. Utah will be voting the same day as Colorado and the Republican Party in Wyoming will be holding caucuses that day. Approximately 90 percent of Utah voters are "unaffiliated" with a political party. People who registered regis-tered more than five years ago never even had the option of registering with a party because it was never on the registration form before. Party is still "optional." Three political parties will b e participating in the Presidential Primary Democratic, Independent Indepen-dent American, and Republican. Only registered political parties are allowed to participate. (The Reform Party did not have ballot status by June 30, the appointed date and therefore they could no participate.) A voter's party affiliation may restrict his or her choice of ballots. In order to vote the Republican ballot, the voter must be a registered Republican or "unaffiliated." In order to vote the Democratic ballot, the voter must be a registered Democrat or "unaffiliated." The Independent Party will let any registered voter vote in their primary. Voters are only permitted to vote one ballot. Voters must mail in their registration form to their county clerk 20 days before the election. If a voter wishes to change party affiliations, the voter must do this 20 days before the election. New registrants can register to vote in person in the county clerk's office up through the Friday before the election. Voters who need to vote absentee absen-tee may request a ballot up until the Tuesday before the election. The Candidates are: (Democratic) (Democra-tic) Bill Bradley and Al Gore; (Republican) John McCain, George W. Bush, Steve Forbes, Alan Keyes and Gary Bauer; (Independent American) Earl F. Dodge and Howard Phillips. Forbes and Bauer have officially withdrawn their candidacy, can-didacy, however they have asked that their names remain on the ballot. |
